wilkins-guus-hiddink-will-have-no-problem-with-chelsea

Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins believes Guus Hiddink will
have no problem returning to league management.
The current Turkey boss has been continually linked with the vacant
manager post at Stamford Bridge since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti,
and Wilkins is adamant the Dutchman will pick up where he left off, having
already won the FA Cup with the club during his brief stint as manager in
2009.
Speaking to reporters, Wilkins said: "I thought Guus would go away and do
his international duties, which is what he's doing with Turkey. He does a
great job with the national sides. So I never thought he'd be coming back.
"But he's a big coach and he's made big decisions in his life and managed
big clubs. So the Chelsea job will hold no fears for him whatsoever. When
you're a big coach like Guus, you can just go into a club and feel quite
comfortable.
"When he came to Chelsea, there were no bigger characters than the guys he
was working with. He handled them in fine fashion, so there would be no
problem coming back into league management.
"Guus is a 64-year-old [who acts like a] 50-year-old - and that helps
immensely. He might be 64 but his heart is still one of a 25-year-old. So
from that aspect he really doesn't have a problem."
The 54-year-old has long been associated with Chelsea, but left his
position at the club in acrimonious circumstances last year, a departure
which coincided with a dip in form for the west London side. However,
despite the nature of his exit, Wilkins admits he would relish another
opportunity to work at Stamford Bridge.
He added: "I'd like another bash, I really would - as a No.1 or as a No.2
to somebody outstanding.
"Guus was great fun to work with. I really enjoyed working with him. When
it comes to me going back there [Chelsea], that's totally irrelevant. He
hasn't got the job, he hasn't phoned me, no-one's made contact, so it's
irrelevant. There's been no approaches from anyone."
The former QPR and Fulham manager also believes whoever lands the hot seat
will be tasked with improving the squad to the level of football's "holy
grail", Barcelona.
"As far as I'm concerned, the squad is nowhere near finished. It needs
additives - as does every other squad in the Premier League - because we
are all chasing the holy grail - and the holy grail is Barcelona," he
continued. "They are unique, the only team on the planet that are a little
bit different. Everybody else is beatable.
"But the Chelsea squad doesn't need radical surgery, just a little nip and
tuck. That's all it needs."

chelsea-need-a-player-like-tottenhams-luka-modric-says
17 Jun 2011 08:18:00 EXCLUSIVE By James Daly
Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has backed the Blues to spend
big in the summer to keep up with the Premier League elite, and supports
their attempts to sign Tottenham star Luka Modric.
With league winners Manchester United already splashing the cash on
Blackburn defender Phil Jones and Manchester City expected to spend big
again, Wilkins believes Chelsea need to do the same simply to keep up.
"If you're left behind in the transfer market you'll be left behind in the
Premier League," said Wilkins, who was talking at the announcement of the
FA Cup's sponsorship deal with Budweiser.
"Yes, there will be money spent I'm sure with all the clubs throughout the
Premier League. Modric has been mentioned to Chelsea, he'd be a great
addition to any squad. That type of player is what you're looking for."
With Blues stalwarts John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba all the
wrong side of 30 there have been suggestions that the three-time Premier
League champions need an injection of youth after seeing the league title
slip out of their hands to Manchester United this season.
When asked if the Chelsea team was too old, Wilkins, who helped the Blues
to a league and cup double in 2010, said: "No, not at all.
"I've been with them, I know their fitness levels and they are quite
superb so there's really no problem as far as the age is concerned. It
just needs a little tinkering here and there and they will be fine.
"They are a wonderfully gifted bunch of guys and they will be back. They
will be pushing for it next year, they have a wonderful desire to win, as
a unit they are different class. They just need that little additive [to
the squad] and I'm sure they will be fine."
In the last transfer window Chelsea splashed out £50m on Fernando Torres
but in 18 games the Spaniard managed just one goal, and Wilkins believes
such a hefty price tag can weigh heavy on a player's shoulders, but backed
the former Liverpool man to return to glory next season.
"I believe you will see him come to the fore next year, no question about
it, he's a wonderfully gifted guy and there is no reason why he shouldn't
flourish," said Wilkins.
"Lots of players would say it [a big price tag] wouldn't matter but I
suppose at the back of your mind you are still worried about it. You'd
want to produce and I think he feels disappointed that he hasn't been able
to deliver the type of goals that Chelsea wanted but that will happen next
year I'm sure."
