YOUTH REPORT: ARSENAL 4 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Sun 06 Mar 2011
A disappointing display from the Blues saw Arsenal build a three-goal lead
by half-time with a confident performance this weekend.
Chelsea's Under 18s pulled a goal back through Aziz Deen-Conteh (pictured)
in the second-half but a fourth Arsenal strike killed the game off only
minutes later.
Dermot Drummy lined up his side in a diamond formation to start but
changed to a 4-3-3 once the Blues had conceded three goals.
The Gunners took the lead after a breakdown in communication at the back.
Confusion between George Saville and Archange Nkumu gifted Arsenal
possession and space and with a free man in the box, they scored.
The second goal came after the hosts broke past Nkumu and crossed to
score, it was an easy goal for Arsenal and the Chelsea defence should have
done better.
However, Arsenal's third goal was well-earned after some clever football
saw the hosts break once more before heading home at the far post.
With the Blues 3-0 down, Drummy changed his formation to 4-3-3, hoping to
block off Arsenal's attacking, fluid football. The change in tactics
worked as Chelsea held off until half-time.
There were no changes before the second-half got underway and after 25
minutes of football the Blues pulled a goal back.
After collecting the ball on the left wing, Deen-Conteh broke past the
opposition's full-back before rounding the keeper and drilling home.
Within two minutes of our goal, Arsenal made it four when Zak Ansah found
the net. The visitors then had a feasible appeal for a penalty ignored
before Arsenal twice hit the post, breaking on the counter-attack.
Boumesca Na Bangna nearly scored after finding himself one-on-one with the
keeper but the Arsenal shot-stopper denied the Blues a second goal.
Chelsea held out to keep the score at 4-1 but the Under 18s were never
able to claw back a result following a disappointing first-half display.
'We were beaten on the day by a better team,' said Drummy after the game.
'With regards to performance, if we'd played like we did in the
second-half during the first-half, it may have been a closer game.
'I was really disappointed. When you put on a Chelsea shirt you have to
fight for the right to play. If you don't fight for that right to play
then you have no chance, you have to have that mentality,' added Drummy.
