Todd Kane was on-target from close range before Fabio Borini (pictured) struck a special second, Bolton having wasted a penalty when the game was scoreless. They did find the net on 89 minutes of a game held at the Lancashire FA ground in Leyland. Fresh from his sub appearance against Blackpool yesterday, Josh McEachran stayed up north to start his sixth reserve game of the season. His presence was welcome in a team that had lost Michael Woods to an ankle injury and Gokhan Tore to suspension following a red card in the last outing away to Villa. Of the scorers in that 2-2 draw, Nathaniel Chalobah was moved into midfield for this game and Adam Phillip was once again on the bench where he was joined by Marko Mitrovic making a welcome return. Last season's Youth Cup top scorer had been out all season with injury. The Chelsea attack was initially spearheaded by Milan Lalkovic with Fabio Borini playing a little deeper than the Slovakian. Bolton, who had JLloyd Samuel and Tamir Cohen providing levels of first-team experience missing from the Chelsea team, were the stronger team at the start of the game. Sam Walker had to save with his legs from Tom Eaves after five minutes and it took some good hold-up play from Todd Kane at right-back to keep the strong-running Eaves away from goal as Bolton applied what pressure there was in the first quarter of an hour. Cohen shot wide before Chelsea at last put an incisive move together midway through the half. It was Lalkovic's pass across the front of the area that opened the space and Billy Clifford should probably have scored but the diving keeper was able to save with his legs. Bolton then survived when Borini almost latched onto a bad back pass by Mark Connolly. On 28 minutes, Chelsea escaped twice; the first time when Cohen headed a corner against the crossbar and then when the ref pointed to the spot for a push as the ball bounced back. Eaves hit a very tame penalty low which Walker was able to save to his right. Chelsea had switched formation to 4-3-3 with Borini in the middle and Lalkovic and Clifford wide by the 35th minute when the first goal came. It was Lalkovic again playing a key part in the move with a back heel down the wing. Overlapping left-back Ryan Bertrand, playing his second reserve game since returning from his lengthy time away on loan, crossed hard into the six-yard box where Borini and Kane were both waiting. The 17-yard-old right-back the one to turn the left-back's ball over the line. Danny Pappoe preserved the lead soon after, clearing Obadeyi's shot off the line. Before the break, Borini rocketed a shot just over the bar after Clifford had headed down when well spotted by Kaby. There was a Chelsea change for the second half. Todd Kane came off which meant Billy Clifford dropping to right-back and Adam Phillip coming on to play wide of the front three. Borini was off target in the early stages of the second half but it proved to be a sighter for one of the reserve goals of the season. Taking the ball centrally, from 25 yards out he rifled it past Rob Lainton who had no chance of saving it. That was with 62 minutes played and it was the Italian's 13th goal in eight reserve appearances. As with the first goal, Chelsea could have conceded moments later, this time when a free-kick from out wide caught Walker needing to back-peddle fast. He tipped the ball onto his crossbar. Michael O'Halloran then missed with a good Bolton chance. Mitrovic's return to action was for the final 15 minutes, Lalkovic the one replaced, but the next opportunity was for Bolton, Eaves turning and shooting over, closely policed by Pappoe. Mitrovic did get involved, playing in a near-post ball that a stretching Phillip turned over and Bolton missed a late chance too before with a minute of normal time remaining, Eaves curled a shot around Walker to pull one back. Nerves jangled as another home chance went begging and four minutes of stoppage time had already been completed when Walker had to make an important save from a free-kick struck around the wall. That's two wins and two draws in the last four games for the second string who now enter the busiest period of their season. 'We started 4-4-2 and they played 4-4-2 and we couldn't get control of the game as they pressured us,' said reserve team manager Steve Holland. 'So we changed to 4-3-3 and that improved it with the extra player in midfield. Josh McEachran started to get on the ball more. We did have some problems with Bolton's long balls and headers but we dealt with that better in the second half and got our play going more. 'The first goal was a good combination and the second was a fantastic strike from Fabio. With two or three minutes to go we looked comfortable and I was looking forward to a clean sheet because we haven't had many but a shot got deflected in which made the end more hairy, but I was pleased with the lads as seven of the youth team started and George Saville came on as well. 'Marko Mitrovic had not played since the Youth Cup Final last year due to a damaged ankle and he has worked tirelessly to get back and he will feel better for getting on the pitch.'
