YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 BIRMINGHAM CITY 1
Posted on: Sat 12 Mar 2011
The youth team had the better of the game at Cobham on Saturday afternoon
but were left frustrated following a second-half equaliser from Birmingham.
It was an improved performance from last week's 4-1 defeat against
Arsenal, and will give coach Dermot Drummy confidence that some of his
squad players can step up when required in the FA Youth Cup.
Chelsea started with a young 11, consisting of two schoolboys and five
first-year scholars, while Marko Mitrovic made his first competitive start
of the season following serious injury.
Scorer of Chelsea's first in the Youth Cup last week, Bobby Devyne
(pictured below), had the first attempt on goal, cutting inside from the
left and firing hard but straight at the Birmingham goalkeeper.

Youth Devyne
Anton Rodgers curled on to the roof of the net and Devyne into the
keeper's arms from left-sided free-kicks, while the visitors once tested
Jamal Blackman's handling from distance, but otherwise it was a scrappy
opening 25 minutes.
It was Chelsea who punctured the scrappiness though, taking the lead
shortly before the half-hour after Devyne's individual skill and cross
picked out Buomesca Na Bangna (pictured top) who headed home from inside
the six-yard box.
Shortly afterwards Blackman produced an excellent save to deny a
Birmingham equaliser, parrying away a close-range effort after three home
fefenders had been beaten by a mazy run.
At half-time Mitrovic was replaced by Henrik Breimyr, who slotted into
midfield with Danny Stenning joining the front three on the right wing, Na
Bangna moving to a central role.
On 51 minutes Blackman had to deny the same player as in the first half
with another flying save after a tricky run, and then captain Ben Sampayo
bravely blocked the follow-up to maintain the narrow advantage. A cross by
Amin Affane (pictured below) cross saw Breimyr turn home from close range
but a questionable offside flag scratched the goal off.

Youth Affane
Within a couple of minutes Birmingham levelled, Blackman finally beaten by
Birmingham's flying winger, who once again had beaten his marker and
drilled low into the far corner.
Affane and Stenning had now switched, while Devyne began to operate with
effect down the right flank, first having a penalty appeal turned away and
then crossing dangerously into the area, just beyond incoming team-mates.
Na Bangna fired into the side netting, Sampayo caused havoc with another
enticing cross and left-back Adam Nditi clipped the outside of the post
with a late drive but in the end Chelsea had to settle for a point, though
Drummy will have been encouraged by his side's desire and tenacity.
