RESERVE REPORT: WIGAN ATHLETIC 0 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Mon 21 Mar 2011
Chelsea completed a tight 1-0 win over Wigan away from home on Monday
afternoon thanks to a Billy Clifford strike.
The Blues scored in the first-half before Wigan, who were unbeaten in the
league at home going into this game, produced a more threatening
performance in the second.
There were four changes to the side which thumped Blackpool 7-2. In
defence Aziz Deen-Conteh replaced Ryan Bertrand at left-back while in
midfield Nathaniel Chalobah was swapped for captain Jacopo Sala, who put
in a fine performance as holding midfielder.
Jan Sebek also replaced Sam Walker between the posts while up front
on-loan Fabio Borini's space was filled by Bobby Devyne.
Reserves manager Steve Holland fielded a 4-3-3 formation, with an
attacking trio of Devyne, Milan Lalkovic and Adam Phillip. Behind them in
a midfield three sat Clifford (pictured), Sala and Kaby Djalo.
Chelsea had the better of the opening exchanges. Deen-Conteh teamed up
well with Phillip on the left flank and managed to cross some dangerous
balls but despite the early chances, it was the hosts who produced the
first shot on goal when Jordan Rugg broke onto a long ball and drilled
wide of the post.
Roman Golobart would also head over from a corner for Wigan before Chelsea
took the lead. After Lalkovic gathered the ball on the left flank and
danced his way into the box, the Chelsea striker launched a fantastic
cross for a well-placed Clifford to smash home.
It was fantastic football by the Blues and arrived 19 minutes into the
game. Wigan did have an opportunity to equalise with a Calum McManaman
header moments later but it was cleared off the line by Deen-Conteh.
Chelsea continued to dominate for the remainder of the half, while Wigan
picked up two yellow cards for a foul and handball.
There were no changes as the second-half got underway and it was Wigan who
created the first chance when McManaman shot wide only minutes after the
restart. Then Tim Chow and McManaman both curled shots inches past the
upright as Wigan continued to threaten Chelsea's goal.
Holland then made a change, swapping Marko Mitrovic for Devyne up front
before a flash of brilliance from Kaby Djalo saw the Portuguese midfielder
send the ball skimming past the post from 20 yards out.
Chelsea were soon looking dangerous again and began to play most of the
team's football in the final third. It was there Lalkovic was shown yellow
for dissent after talking back to the referee following a foul.
But despite Chelsea pressuring the hosts, Wigan were still searching for
an equaliser and when McManaman shot from close range it took a good save
from Sebek to keep Chelsea ahead. Todd Kane then made way for George
Saville, who moved into midfield while Clifford went right-back.
As the game drew to a close, Djalo saw a feasible appeal for penalty
denied before Mitrovic shot over from eight yards out following a
fantastic ball from Phillip to Lalkovic for the Slovakian to cross.
It was the last chance for Chelsea before the final whistle, ending a
strong performance from the Blues to secure a third straight win that
moves the team up to second in the table.
