YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 NORWICH CITY 0
Posted on: Sun 03 Apr 2011
A young Under 18s team beat a strong Norwich City side with an outstanding
performance which saw Adam Nditi score the winner.
The second-half goal was enough to seal victory thanks to an impressive
defensive display and a sterling performance from Jamal Blackman, who had
a brilliant game between the posts.
Dermot Drummy fielded a young side with several Under 16s. Ben Sampayo
(pictured) captained from right-back while Alex Davey and Ali Gordon sat
in central defence. Goalscorer Nditi completed the back line.
There was a midfield trio of Archange Nkumu, Amin Affane and Lewis Baker,
while up front, Bobby Devyne took up his position on the left-wing, with
Walter Figueira in the centre and Ismail Seremba out right.
Chelsea defended resolutely for the first 20 minutes, Jamal Blackman made
several good saves to keep the game goalless. The Blues' back four were
also performing admirably.
Sampayo also made a couple of crucial blocks as Norwich pressured. Chelsea
did retaliate on a two occasions but never really threatened the hosts'
goal.
That would come in the second-half when Nditi found himself one-on-one
with the keeper but the Norwich shot-stopper managed to save.
Baker tested him further with a flick from just inside the box but the
goalkeeper again saved to keep the scores level.
It would take a fantastic strike from Nditi after 65 minutes of football
to finally beat the Norwich keeper. The left-back struck from the edge of
the box, beating him at the near post following a corner.
Drummy then introduced several substitutes, with Anjur Osmanovic coming
on, and later Under 15 striker Alex Kiwomya made his debut.
Norwich increased the pressure further as the game drew to a close and it
took another brilliant save from Blackman in the dying moments to secure
the three points.
'The Under 16s who came in brought something fresh to the side today, a
raw edge, but the performances of Bobby Devyne and Sampayo were admirable
as well, their experienced showed,' said Drummy after the game.
'We gave a debut to Alex Kiwomya, who is a very promising under 15 striker
as well, so all-in-all it was a good trip to Norwich. A nice weekend away
from home,' added Drummy.
