RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 1 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 3
Posted on: Thu 14 Apr 2011
Chelsea Reserves fell to a first defeat in eight games at Cobham, with
West Brom recovering well after Adam Phillip (pictured) had put the Blues
second string ahead with a well-struck goal.
It was a Chelsea side featuring five of the side currently contesting the
FA Youth Cup semi-final with Manchester United, and added to it in the
second half was Carl Magnay playing his first game for over a year after a
long injury.
West Brom are undefeated away from home this season and they forced an
early save from Jan Sebek with a shot struck straight at the Czech keeper.
Watched by Carlo Ancelotti and his guest, former Italy and AC Milan
manager Arrigo Sacchi, it took a while for Chelsea to find their stride
but when they did finally threaten, it resulted in the opening goal, an
individual strike from Phillip who cut in from the left and fired inside
the near post on 12 minutes. It was his sixth goal for the reserves this
season.
On 21 minutes West Brom should have drawn level but when Kayleden Brown
had been found just a few yards out by some quick passing in the box, he
scooped his shot well, well over.
Both sides looked well-organised and were using the full width of the
pitch, and they equalised when a cross from Saido Berahino was headed in
by a stooping Brown who was injured in the process.
Four minutes from half-time, Conor Clifford and Phillip combined to put
Gokhan Tore in a promising position in the box but the Turkey Under 21
international lost possession before he was able to shoot.
Sebek then saved well to his right from a dipping shot from Sam Manton and
a good sliding block from Todd Kane thwarted another attack.
Inside stoppage time at the end of the first period, Lalkovic left
centre-back Paul Downing for dead when Clifford played a long ball forward
but as the Slovakian cut in from the wing and went for goal, he was
crowded out at the near post.
Just 10 seconds into the second half it needed good reactions from Sebek
as he used his height to tip a shot from Berahino onto the bar. Tomas
Kalas then blocked a shot from Thorne as West Brom continued to carry the
greater threat.
Clifford was wayward with a 30-yard shot for Chelsea on the hour, as was
Kemar Roofe for the visitors when Sebek only reached the edge of the area
with a punched cross.
The Chelsea keeper could do nothing about the next effort, a screamer of a
volley from midfielder Manton that flew into the far top corner to give
West Brom a 66th minute lead.
Lalkovic could have levelled almost immediately but skied a difficult
chance at the far post and then a great ball from Chalobah out to the wing
allowed Lalkovic to cross to Tore but the visitors defended well. Chalobah
had moved into midfield with the introduction of Carl Magnay into central
defence. McEachran was playing more advanced than the first half too with
Clifford taking on the anchor role.
With time running out, Lalkovic fired a shot from a difficult angle into
the midriff of the keeper, and then when McEachran teed up Chalobah on the
edge of the box, a looping shot was well tipped over. It had been a good
effort from the Chelsea schoolboy.
Chelsea been pressing hard since West Brom went ahead but hope of a late
equaliser was quashed a minute into stoppage time when West Brom scored
their third after the ball was wrestled from Tomas Kalas and a neat move
set up substitute Adil Nabi for a finish.
Reserve team manager Steve Holland said:
'We didn't play badly, it was a good game between two good teams and
one-all at half time was about right. Adam Phillip got a good goal and for
their goal we might have stopped the cross but it was a good one and a
good header.
'We were starting to build up a bit of steam in the second half, without
making many chances, but then conceded a really well-hit shot that maybe
somebody should've pressured more. At the end we didn't having the guile
to create clear-cut chances and got caught pushing forward to look for the
equaliser.
'Players that have been playing well lately didn't play as well as they
have been but generally it was a half-decent performance and West Brom
deserve some credit, because they did well.'
