LOAN INTEREST
Posted on: Tue 26 Apr 2011
It has been a busy time for Chelsea's 15-strong on-loan contingent, with a
flurry of goals over the past few days.
Daniel Sturridge headed Bolton's opener against Arsenal at the weekend,
pouncing on a loose ball at close range to set his side on the way to a
2-1 win that leaves Arsene Wenger's side clinging on to their third place
in the Barclays Premier League, while the victory strengthens Bolton's
position in eighth.
It was Sturridge's third in two games following his brace against West Ham
on April 9, the forward having been forced to sit out the FA Cup
semi-final defeat to Stoke because he had already represented us in the
competition this season. The forward also won a penalty for the Trotters
in the Arsenal game.
The forward now has seven goals in nine Bolton appearances since joining
on loan at the end of January.

Gael Kakuta has added another two hours of football to his season with
three Fulham appearances since our last update. The French playmaker
played a combined 45 minutes win two substitute appearances against
Everton and Wolves, where he nearly scored a late winner, while featuring
for the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United just over a
fortnight ago.
Michael Mancienne made his return to first team football after four months
out with injury on Saturday, playing half an hour as a sub in the 1-1 draw
with Kakuta's Fulham at Molineux.
In the Championship, Jeffrey Bruma has been enjoying an eventful time with
Leicester City, smashing home two goals from midfield on Monday to help
Sven Goran Eriksson's side to a 4-2 win over Watford.
The 18-year-old, normally a defender, has been used further up by the
Swede and used the freedom to contribute his first goals in senior
football.

Bruma was congratulated by Chelsea team-mate Patrick van Aanholt, also
with The Foxes for the second half of the campaign.
After a month out with a thigh injury, the left-back made his return in
the 3-3 draw away at Middlesbrough on April 2, a game in which Bruma was
sent off for two yellow cards. In the next game, a 4-0 win over Burnley,
Van Aanholt scored his first Leicester goal and has now chalked up 11
appearances.

Another Chelsea youngster on the goal trail is Fabio Borini. Since making
his Swansea debut on March 19, the Italian forward has hit six in seven
games as Brendan Rodgers and his side jostle for play-off positions.

Borini in Swansea action
Automatic promotion is not yet impossible either, though extremely
unlikely, but Borini's freshness will leave him confident of scoring more
goals in the run-in.
The 20-year-old's two against Ipswich on Monday were his second brace,
after he also netted twice against Nottingham Forest on his debut.

Jack Cork has been back in action for Burnley following his health scare
on England Under 21 duty last month.
The midfielder returned to Chelsea for tests at the end of March after
suffering heart palpitations but was given the all-clear to play at
Nottingham Forest on April 12, a rare 2-0 defeat under new manager Bobby
Howe.
Since then the midfielder has played in three wins and a draw at home to
Portsmouth on Monday, a result that saw them drop to eighth in the table,
two points adrift of the final play-off spot with two Championship league
games to come.
Ben Gordon's Scunthorpe United have been all but relegated following their
2-1 defeat to Millwall on Monday. They are now six points adrift of safety
with two games to play, with an inferior goal difference to both Doncaster
and Crystal Palace.
The Chelsea man was an unused sub on Monday but has been a regular since
switching to Glanford Park, and has 14 appearances, one as a substitute,
for The Irons.
Relegation may be looming for Gordon but that threat is now gone for Jacob
Mellis and Barnsley, who are safe with 52 points.
The midfielder has racked up 12 appearances for The Tykes, scoring in his
first two games in February but not since. Although a regular starter,
Mellis has not completed 90 minutes since February.
Finally in the second tier, Danny Philliskirk made his Sheffield United
debut as a second-half substitute in their 3-1 defeat at Preston on April
16, and followed that up with a late appearance in the 3-2 win over
Bristol City on Saturday.
In League Two, there is a pair of Chelsea goalkeepers. Rhys Taylor has
played 47 times in all competitions for Crewe Alexandra this season, but
has not kept a clean sheet for five games. They are 13th with two games
remaining.
Sam Walker was an emergency signing for Barnet in March and has played
five times for the Bees, including a 2-1 win over Crewe, in which he was
sent off after receiving two yellow cards for time-wasting. No doubt he
and Taylor shared a word afterwards!
In his five appearances, Walker is yet to keep a clean sheet but is also
yet to be on the losing side, winning three and drawing two.
Over in Holland, inconsistency has been the story of Vitesse Arnhem in
recent weeks, though Chelsea pair Slobodan Rajkovic and Nemanja Matic
remain regulars for Albert Ferrer's side.
Midfielder Matic, who will join Benfica on a permanent deal at the end of
the season, has 26 Eredivisie appearances and two goals, while defender
Rajkovic has played 23 times. They are their side's first and third most
used outfield players respectively.
Goalkeeper Matej Delac is yet to appear for Vitesse, who are 14th out of
18 sides in the Dutch top tier.
