YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 0 ASTON VILLA 2
Posted on: Tue 03 May 2011
A penalty in each half consigned the youth team to defeat in their
penultimate home league match of the season, the young Blues side striking
woodwork either side of half-time.
The game was contested by two evenly matched sides, Chelsea beginning with
five schoolboys and ending with six on the pitch. Villa had their fair
share of schoolboys too.
One of Chelsea's Under 16s, centre-back Alex Davey, headed over early on
and on six minutes, left-back Amin Affane hit a post with a free-kick
after a foul on Bobby Devyne.
The next foul of the game gave Villa their first penalty, converted by
their captain Daniel Johnson after a foul by Anjur Osmanovic.
Chelsea responded positively and good Villa defending blocked an Adam
Nditi shot after 18 minutes as he was played in by Devyne and midfielder
Lewis Baker (pictured) couldn't quite tee up a colleague in the box after
collecting an Affane cross.
Despite ending up on the losing side, there was a good display by Jamal
Blackman in the Chelsea goal. Twenty minutes in he made a double save, the
first block with his legs from close range from Graham Burke and then he
moved across goal to keep out a follow-up effort from Connor Taylor at the
opposite post.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, making his second youth team appearance as an Under
15, was unfortunate when his game ended before half-an-hour was played due
to injury. He was replaced by another schoolboy, Ali Gordon, who has been
given plenty of youth team opportunities late in the season and went to
right-back. Ben Sampayo moved to left back with Affane (pictured below)
going into midfield.

Another good save from Blackman kept out Burke again after the young Blues
found themselves outnumbered at the back following a swift Villa
counter-attack.
Devyne warmed the hands of the Villa keeper shortly before the break but
although enjoying a good percentage of the possession, Chelsea had found a
cutting edge hard to come by in the opening 45 minutes.
Fourteen minutes after the restart, Villa were awarded their second
penalty, this time Archange Nkumu judged to have made an illegal
challenge. Johnson again converted.
Further Chelsea substitutions brought Alex Kiwomya into attack for his
second appearance and Nortei Nortey back for his third after a long-term
injury. Both are schoolboys.
On 71 minutes Chelsea put together a move that stretched Villa and hit the
bar, Boumesca Na Bangna volleying a difficult ball to keep down when
Sampayo crossed.
Back down the other end, Blackman executed the save of the game to keep
out a header from Burke. He also saved from Jack Grealish before the game
ended.
'It was obviously not the right result but a lot of young boys played
today including Lewis Baker who is a very exciting talent with lovely
control and plenty of energy,' reported youth team manager Dermot Drummy.
'We gave away two silly penalties and Jamal made a few saves but their
keeper had to make a couple of saves too. We need to take our chances.
'For the amount of possession we had I would have liked to have seen us
create a few more clear-cut ones but we understand that the boys are
learning and they showed commitment.'
