POST-SEASON BRIEFING 2010/11
Posted on: Mon 06 Jun 2011
Nine months of Chelsea action are summed up by club historian Rick
Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton in their comprehensive review
of the campaign recently completed…
Season 2010/11 was as disappointing as the previous Double-winning
campaign was exhilarating. There were no trophies won and the Blues
registered statistically the worst set of results since the pre-Abramovich
era.
Of course, all is relative. Carlo Ancelotti still managed to steer his
squad to a second-place finish - for only the fourth time in our club's
top-flight history - and our goals-for tally was bettered only three times
in the previous 12 seasons.
Along with Manchester City we conceded the fewest goals over the campaign -
33 - and were the best in the league at holding on to a lead when we scored
first.
Chelsea attempted more shots than anyone else - 563 - with chief marksman
Didier Drogba managing 109 despite the debilitations of malaria.

Chelsea v West Ham
The Ivorian's combined total of goals and assists - 27 - was originally
the league's best. However, one strike (versus Blackpool) was taken away
from him by the Dubious Goals Panel. Florent Malouda was the Blues' next
best with a combined total of 18.
Frank Lampard became the first bought Chelsea player to make 500
appearances for the club. John Terry joined him in the elite 500+ club
alongside fellow homegrowns Ron Harris, Peter Bonetti and John Hollins.
Chelsea were awarded the second most penalties - eight - in the league.
Manchester City were handed nine. Carlo Ancelotti was the only Barclays
Manager of the Month award recipient not to drop points in his next match
in charge.
We also topped the Premier League's Fair Play table and are currently
rated third in Uefa's team rankings having qualified for a ninth
consecutive Champions League campaign.
Never the less, our points and games lost totals were the worst since the
watershed 2002/03 season.
The Unofficial 'Arsene Wenger League' Top 5
===========================================
This time two seasons ago Arsene Wenger proposed a change in the Premier
League. He suggested that a team should be awarded three points for a win
but an additional point for every goal in the margin of victory.
His idea was supposed to encourage teams to keep going for goals when they
were ahead, providing greater entertainment. As the table below shows,
however, the proposal would make virtually no difference to the final
table, except that his side would have finished just seven points behind
Chelsea, and in third place. Still no trophy though.
Adjusted pts PL pts
==============================
1. Man Utd 116 (80)
2. Chelsea 94 (71)
3. Arsenal 87 (68)
4. Man City 84 (71)
5. Spurs 62 (62)
