BRAZIL DRAW BLANKS
Posted on: Mon 04 Jul 2011
Ramires and Brazil were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Venezuela in
their opening game of the 2011 Copa America on Sunday.
The Chelsea man played the first 75 minutes before being replaced by
former Manchester City man Elano, but could not help his side break down
the resilient Venezuelans, who are the only South American country never
to qualify for a World Cup.
Neutrals were expecting someting of a Brazilian onslaught, referring to
the 7-0 thumping they gave the same opponents in this competition in 1999,
but the goals did not come, AC Milan forward Alexandre Pato coming closest
when his shot struck the crossbar.
Ramires had earlier supplied a 50-yard pass for the forward, who shot
wide, and pulled one back from the by-line for Pato, only for his effort
to be blocked by a defender. Ramires also received treatment after being
on the end of a heavy challenge.
David Luiz was an unused substitute for the Brazilians, who started with
Lucio and Thiago Silva in central defence, with Ramires operating in a
deep midfield position that allowed Robinho, Paulo Henrique, Pato and
Neymar to attack.
Paraguay and Ecuador also drew 0-0 in their first group games, and Brazil
will meet Paraguay in their next game on Saturday.

CHALOBAH'S CHALLENGE ENDS
Posted on: Mon 04 Jul 2011
Nathaniel Chalobah's Under 17 World Cup campaign came to an end on Monday
night as England were beaten 3-2 by Germany in the quarter-finals.
The Chelsea youngster, 16, who will become a first year scholar when he
returns to the club from Mexico, captained the side in Morelia but could
not prevent a painful defeat.
Chalobah (pictured wearing 6) had an early chance but headed over before
the Germans took the lead on seven minutes, doubling their advantage on 24
as England struggled to get a grip on proceedings.
The centre-back, who was a reserve regular last season, almost pulled a
goal back after half-time with a stunning overhead kick, only for the
German keeper to turn it away to safety, and two minutes later the game
looked over as England fell three behind.
A Sam Magri penalty gave England a lifeline with a quarter of the game to
go, and Chalobah went close once more before Hallam Hope pulled another
goal back with seven minutes remaining but there would be no miracle
comeback, and Chalobah will return home after an impressive tournament.
A day earlier, Brazil edged past Japan into the semi-finals following a
3-2 win, but forward Lucas Piazon, who will join Chelsea upon turning 18
in January, was not involved.

BRAZIL STUTTER ON
Posted on: Sat 09 Jul 2011
After two games played it is still no wins for Ramires and Brazil in the
Copa America but it could have been much worse as an 89th minute goal
denied opponents Paraguay a win.
Ramires played the first 71 minutes of the group game in Cordoba,
Argentina. David Luiz again remained on the bench.
The match followed on from last weekend's shock 0-0 draw against Venezuela
for the eight-time winners and reigning South American champions.
Brazil took the lead on 38 minutes through Jadson of Shakhtar Donetsk, his
first international goal having come into the side for dropped Robinho,
but Man City's Roque Santa Cruz equalised early in the second half and
Nelson Haedo Valdez put Paraguay ahead on 66 minutes following a mistake
from Barcelona's Dani Alves.
It was Fred, an 81st minute substitute for Neymar, who made it 2-2 with a
minute left on the clock.
The result leaves Brazil level in the table with Paraguay on two points,
two behind Venezuela who beat Ecuador later in the day. Brazil play
Ecuador in their crunch final group game on Wednesday.
At the Under 17 World Cup in Mexico, Brazil's Lucas Piazon, who has a
pre-contract agreement to join Chelsea, was denied a place in the final
when Brazil went down 3-0 to Uruguay at the semi-final stage.

RAMIRES HELPS BRAZIL THROUGH
Posted on: Thu 14 Jul 2011
Brazil finally found their form in the Copa America to win their third and
final group game 4-2 against Ecuador.
Following two draws in their opening two encounters, the victory was
enough for the reigning champions to top their group. Following two games
in which he was substituted in the second half, Ramires played the full 90
minutes. David Luiz was for the third time an unused sub.
Brazil's goals were scored by Alexandre Pato and Neymar who netted two
apiece, Ecuador equalising twice before going behind for a third time just
beyond the hour and then falling 4-2 behind on 71 minutes.
In their quarter-final on Sunday, Brazil will now play Paraguay, with whom
they drew 2-2 in the group games.

RAMIRES AND DAVID LUIZ EXIT COPA
Posted on: Mon 18 Jul 2011
Chelsea participation in the 2011 Copa America is at an end with Brazil's
elimination from the tournament following a penalty shoot-out horror show.
The reigning champions of the South American competition played Paraguay
in the quarter-final on Sunday and neither side could find the net in 120
minutes of open play. Ramires played the full match but David Luiz was
again on the bench, first choice centre-back Thiago Silva having overcome
an injury concern. The Chelsea defender did not make the pitch in any of
the games.
A player from each side was sent-off in extra time, Liverpool's Lucas for
Brazil.
When it came to penalties, Brazil missed all four they took, Paraguay
scoring two to take them through. Ramires was not among the spot-kick
culprits.

INTERNATIONAL ACTION FOR YOUNGSTERS
Posted on: Sat 30 Jul 2011
It may have been a quiet summer on the senior international stage, but at
junior levels there are major tournaments taking place in Europe and South
America.
The Under 20 World Cup kicked off in Colombia this week with three Chelsea
youngsters involved, though none have yet appeared.
Gael Kakuta would have been with Andre Villas-Boas and the first team
squad in Asia had he not been called up to the French squad, and he has
been tipped by Fifa.com as one to watch in the tournament.
'Everyone has fun in this team. The chemistry's good on and off the pitch
and that makes everything easier during games,' he said.
The French begin their assault on the title this week when they meet the
hosts, before facing Mali and South Korea in their later games.
Ben Gordon is with the England squad, and was an unused substitute in
their 0-0 draw against North Korea on Friday. He will be hoping to be
involved in the subsequent games against Argentina and Mexico.
Finally goalkeeper Matej Delac begins his campaign with Croatia on Sunday.
They play Saudi Arabia in their first game before facing Nigeria and
Guatemala.
At Under 19 level, Tomas Kalas has helped Czech Republic into their first
ever European Championship final.
The defender, who only arrived at Chelsea midway through last season
having signed the summer before, netted the second goal in their 4-2
semi-final victory over Serbia in Romania.
Kalas reacted first to pounce on a loose ball inside the Serbian box to
smash home after the goalkeeper had parried a Czech shot. It was one of
three goals in the first 20 minutes for his side, who conceded two shortly
afterwards before scoring a late goal to confirm their victory.
They will meet Spain in the final on Monday.

BIG SHOCKS AT U20 WORLD CUP
Posted on: Mon 01 Aug 2011
Chelsea's youngsters have made a disappointing start to the Under 20 World
Cup in Colombia.
Gael Kakuta's France were on the wrong end of a 4-1 battering from the
hosts on Saturday night, the 20-year-old completing the first 68 minutes
before being withdrawn.
Things were little better for Matej Delac, in goal for Croatia against
Saudi Arabia on Sunday, completing the 90 minutes but losing 2-0 to a side
who had not won in this competition in nine previous outings.
The one hope of improving things today comes in the Under 19 European
Championship final, where Tomas Kalas will represent Czech Republic
against Spain. That game starts in Bucharest, Romania, from 6pm UK time
