INTERNATIONALS: CHELSEA PAIR IN UNDER 21 ACTION
Posted on: Wed 10 Aug 2011
Conor Clifford played 45 minutes during Republic of Ireland's comeback
from a one-goal deficit against Austria last night.
Clifford's country won the game 2-1, with all goals coming in the second
half, but the Chelsea midfielder made way for Joe Mason at the break.
Clifford could now play in Republic of Ireland's senior team in their
match against Croatia tonight.
Milan Lalkovic also represented his country at Under 21 level, playing for
65 minutes as Slovakia drew 1-1 with Portugal.
Lalkovic nearly opened the scoring after three minutes only for the keeper
to save and he was involved in several of Slovakia's opening chances.
Lalkovic's side went in front just after the break with a crisp volley
from 25 yards. Portugal pulled the game level with a scrambled effort
after 64 minutes, one minute before Lalkovic was substituted.

Posted on: Wed 10 Aug 2011
Didier Drogba scored his 50th international goal when he won and converted
a penalty in Ivory Coast's 4-3 victory against Israel in Geneva.
Chelsea's all-time highest international goalscorer reached the total in
his 78th game for his country. The Ivorians went 3-0 up before Israel
netted twice to make it 3-2. Drogba restored a two-goal cushion before a
late goal narrowed the margin again. Israel captain Yossi Benayoun played
the first 61 minutes. Salomon Kalou was not involved.
Fernando Torres was a starter but was subbed after just 15 minutes of
Spain's game in Italy. It is reported the striker was suffering from
concussion. The Italians won 2-1 with a winner six minutes from time.

to a single goal scored on 53 minutes.

TWO IN, ONE OUT IN UNDER 20 WORLD CUP
Posted on: Thu 11 Aug 2011
Oriel Romeu kept his nerve to score a vital shoot-out penalty for Spain in
the first knockout stage of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.
The Spanish beat South Korea 7-6 on spot-kicks, the new Chelsea signing
taking his side's last penalty before the Koreans' crucial miss.
Spain were the better side throughout the game but could not find the net.
One of the best chances was made by a brilliant tackle from our midfield
signing. South Korea had arguably the best opportunity of the game in
extra time but Spain also missed three chances to win it in the second
period. In the shoot-out, Spain failed from the spot once to their
opponents' twice. Romeu, who has already served a suspension in the
tournament, was booked.
France won a close game against Ecuador with a goal a quarter of an hour
from time. They could thank goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali for string of saves
early on. For the first time in the tournament Gael Kakuta started on the
bench and was introduced immediately after the goal.
England however went out. Left-back Ben Gordon played the whole game which
was decided by a single second half goal by Nigeria. England failed to
score in any of their four matches in the tournament. Gordon played twice.
France will play Nigeria in the quarter-finals on Sunday, Spain will face
Brazil.
