Meireles Porto Porto went ahead in that second leg through Ricardo Quaresma before Chelsea pulled it round with a second-half equaliser and a winner from Michael Ballack 12 minutes from time. In our 2009 group stage meetings we won both games 1-0. In his Liverpool season Raul had far more success, playing a big part in two victories. At Anfield it was he who won possession and passed quickly forward for Fernando Torres to score his second and best goal of the game as Liverpool won 2-0. Then he volleyed in a far-post winner in the rematch at the Bridge. 'It was a special game because Fernando came to Chelsea and the people in Liverpool wanted to win the game a lot. It was special for me because I wanted to score a goal of course.' It was one in a run of five goals in six games for the midfielder who hadn't previously found the net for his new club. Having played out wide in a midfield four under Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish asked him to play behind the forwards and his goal tally for the season quickly became comparable with his Porto campaigns. Whether that was more due to a change in position or acclimatisation to the Premier League is not an easy question. 'Sometimes it happens, you have the opportunities and you don't score and sometimes you take one shot and you score. 'He has mentioned that,' says Raul. 'It is the number I wear for Portugal and when I was in Porto. I only changed that shirt for the last year in Porto. It was free at Chelsea and of course I picked it because in Porto I did well and that is why it is special for me.' In making our last signing before the transfer window closed we brought in a versatile international with both Premier League experience and 35 Champions League games to his name. He has prior knowledge of his manager's methods and will have undergone a whole week of training at Cobham should he be asked to make his debut this weekend. He has even played against this weekend's opponents Sunderland already this season.
