Raul Meireles arrived just before the deadline last week and was one of four additions to the combined midfield and forward pool of players. All the recent arrivals are available for against Sunderland today. 'Overall the squad for this season is extremely competitive,' claims Villas-Boas. 'Raul Meireles was an extremely good deal for us but I cannot see it from a Liverpool perspective, I can only see the player that everyone saw last season for Liverpool, and I think it was a very good deal for a very good player. Oriol Romeu has also arrived and he can offer in that number six position where we needed it. 'Raul Meireles can offer in different positions, the number six position - defensive midfielder - and also offensive midfielder. He has very good timing of arrival in the box which you saw by the amount of goals he scored last year. He has awareness to arrive in the box with the correct timing not just to score but to assist as well and he is a little bit like Frank Lampard, Oriol, Ramires, Mikel and Josh McEachran because he is a player who constantly opens a line of pass. He is a player who you know is always available to receive the ball and it fits into the philosophy that we want to implement.' The list of four is competed by Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku. Villas-Boas comfirms that he sees in Mata the versatility to play as an attacking midfielder or a winger. Lukaku it is clear is a striker. 'In terms of forwards we were a complete sector but he is an extremely good talent which we saw to the full extent in the 20 minutes he played against Norwich,' says the manager. 'So we couldn't allow ourselves to lose a talent like that at that price so we took the gamble. And I am pretty happy with what is happening, we touched on the things that we needed. We took our time to see what was going on and make decisions and I think that is valid.' The two teams at the top of the table with maximum points, Manchester United and Manchester City, also added significant players to their squads for this season and have big wins under their belts. Villas-Boas is far from worrying about the two-point gap from the top down to Chelsea at this stage. 'You saw what happened last year with Chelsea in the beginning when it was twice 6-0 wins and then it didn't happen in the end,' he points out. 'The impact it plays on the rest of the season can be good, decisive or not. 'I like to play well but I like to win games as well and you just have to score one more goal than the opponent. Of course everybody wants to start well and I would be more happy if I had nine points rather than seven, but I am happy with seven because we went to Stoke away and Stoke at their ground last season lost just three games. I think we were close to winning the Stoke game and it just didn't happen.' Now for another test away to a team in red and white stripes, Sunderland, who are missing striker Asamoah Gyan because of a hamstring problem picked up on international duty with Ghana. 'It is a fantastic stadium to play in but it is a good time to go to Sunderland,' says Villas-Boas. 'Normally when you go to there the winter is a bit more difficult. 'They have drawn at Liverpool so the signs are that it is a good team, well organised. [Stephane] Sessegnon is an excellent player as an assister. John O'Shea didn't play for the national team so he is fresh and they are competitive in midfield.
