YOUTH REPORT: COVENTRY CITY 3 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Sun 11 Sep 2011
Chelsea's youths were beaten 3-2 at Coventry on Saturday, but coach Adi
Viveash was encouraged by some impressive attacking football.
Having fallen behind early, the young Blues got themselves in front
through goals from Philipp Prosenik and schoolboy Reuben Loftus-Cheek, but
were pegged back before half-time, and conceded a winner in the second
half.
'We had some fantastic attacking play at times, the big difference I think
was that in the first 20 minutes we could have been three or four up but
we weren't ruthless enough,' Viveash said afterwards. 'We had three
one-on-ones and just made the wrong decision or took too long.
'We conceded three soft goals, the first was a diagonal long ball, the
number nine and Rohan Ince competed for the ball, it dropped down and he
just nicked it past Mitchell and won the penalty. I don't think there was
a lot of contact but they scored and we were 1-0 down again.'
We equalised through Prosenik, who chested down a lofted Nathaniel
Chalobah pass, turned and finished, before going in front through
15-year-old Reuben Loftus-Cheek, who finished his one-on-one after Amin
Affane had played him in from the left.
A minute later we were level however, as concentration in defence dropped
and Todd Kane was beaten to the ball inside the area by the Coventry
forward who levelled the scores with a powerful finish.
Coventry's winner came into the second half, when a looping header beat
goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney to inflict a third defeat of the season on our
Academy side.
'It was harsh on the lads because I felt we outplayed them and we
dominated the match,' Viveash assessed. 'I don't want to stop any of our
attacking flair but conceding a lot of goals is not good. We have a
different back four every week and you won't get continuity but we need to
make little adjustments and have the same desire in defence as we do on
the front foot.
'It was good for Rohan to play 90 minutes and he looked like his old self,
Philippp Prosenik did 70 and got himself a goal, so that's very positive
too. Nathaniel Chalobah asked to play which is important, and he has to
find a level within that group, his challenge is to be the best player
every week.
'John Swift and Loftus-Cheek were the best players. He is developing very
nicely and has got a lot of potential, Reuben. He can play centre-back or
midfield. There were a lot of positives and we have to be careful the lads
don't get too down.
'We're not saying it's okay to go out and lose, we promote a winning
mentality but we want to do it the right way and some of the football they
are playing is of a very high level.'
