Boas-rules-revealed-Secrets-Chelseas-new-boss.html
By Neil Ashton
Last updated at 11:49 PM on 19th September 2011
Andre Villas-Boas was back at his desk by 7am on Monday, breaking down
the DVD of Chelsea's 3-1 defeat at Manchester United. His technical staff
cut it for him overnight, highlighting Chelsea's defensive flaws at Old
Trafford from every camera angle.
By the time he left at 7pm, Chelsea's young manager was convinced his team
can catch Manchester United. He is still dismayed by the opening two
goals, certain they were offside, but that 12-hour shift was about the
bigger picture.
That attention to detail is Villas-Boas' biggest asset, marking him out
among Chelsea's players as the ultimate taskmaster. Four years to the day
since Jose Mourinho's acrimonious departure from Stamford Bridge,
Villas-Boas is running the club just the way he wants it.
The Carling Cup was the first trophy Chelsea won under Mourinho and
Villas-Boas aims to follow that example, starting by beating Fulham on
Wednesday night.
He is a stickler for time-keeping, monitoring the players entering their
Cobham training centre from his glass-panelled office on the first floor.
Chelsea's manager has been known to watch them pull into the car park,
watching the second hands on his watch as they beat his day-to-day
deadlines.
There is a fines system in place, around £1,000 a time, for anyone
shuffling on to the team bus or the training ground after the appointed
time.
Instead of ambling out on to the pitches, the players were ready to start
their warm-down at 11am sharp. That aspect of Villas-Boas's management
will be illustrated in the coming days when he relaxes the regime to allow
the world's media to watch him take a session.
The Portuguese coach has agreed in principle to the idea, throwing open
the training ground doors to watch the master at work. There they will see
him march out on to the surface with a clipboard before putting Chelsea's
players through a carefully constructed session.
He takes his match-day touchline behaviour into training, on his haunches
and gesticulating to his players to demand that little bit more. Those
principles have been adopted by Chelsea's players, eager to learn from a
manager with a fresh approach and some innovative ideas.
Villas-Boas has also tightened up the training ground since former manager
Carlo Ancelotti was fired, bringing discipline and focus at the start of
another era.
Under Ancelotti, players' agents, friends and hangers-on were allowed into
the training ground. Now they cannot get past the main gate unless they
have an appointment that has been sanctioned by the manager.
He has become the club's eyes and ears, demanding to know about every
aspect of the training-ground environment. That ultra-professional
approach, a departure from the way Ancelotti approached day-to-day
management, has met with the approval of the players.
Chelsea players are also getting used to team meetings, being called into
a huddle on the training field before he takes a session. It is far more
formal in the team hotel, with players getting used to 45 minutes of
opposition analysis after dinner.
There is the occasional dissenting voice, with a couple cruelly nicknaming
Villas-Boas 'Bambi' because they believe him to be naive.
The vast majority have been impressed with his decisive nature, not afraid
to make tactical changes when necessary. The decision to substitute Frank
Lampard at half-time on Sunday was a big moment, making a change to try to
salvage something from the game.
He has the backing of the owner to make those calls, something that has
been transmitted to some of the star names in those team meetings.
There is a feeling among them that Villas-Boas is about to drop a
bombshell, removing a big name from the team or even the club as part of
his masterplan.
Some of them have been told they are likely to be rested against Fulham,
taken out of the team to preserve their fitness ahead of the weekend.
Instead they will have to train as part of the timetable that Villas-Boas
presents to his squad at the start of each day.
Training-ground staff, many of them demoralised towards the end of
Ancelotti's two-year stay, have also responded to the new manager. He has
already earned their respect, as have the players who are fighting for a
place in the team.
Villas-Boas has been fighting Didier Drogba's cause over his contractual
dispute, persuading the powers above to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.
Drogba has been offered a one-year extension on his current terms, but the
Ivory Coast striker is demanding two. Villas-Boas has intervened,
recommending a resolution to the dispute without further delay.
That is a short-term solution, but Villas-Boas is already visualising
something vastly different.
