RESERVE REPORT: LIVERPOOL 3 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Wed 26 Oct 2011
=== Summary ===
The first match in Wednesday's double-header on Merseyside ended in defeat
after a disappointing display from the second string who scored their goal
late in the game.
It was Kaby Djalo who pulled one back with his side already three goals
down in a match that was played at Liverpool's academy. Chances proved
hard to come by throughout for the Blues who following an unbeaten run at
the start to the season have now lost three games in a row.
=== Team news ===
Josh McEachran, Ryan Bertrand and Romelu Lukaku, who all started the
previous match, were with the first team squad for the game at Everton so
Ben Gordon started in central defence, Aziz Deen-Conteh returned at
left-back and George Saville began in midfield. Carl Magnay also returned
at the back and with Sam Hutchinson not involved, Nathaniel Chalobah
assumed the captain's armband.
=== First half ===
Chelsea have been guilty of giving goals away too easily in the recent
defeats and so it proved again when Liverpool took an early lead.
Seven minutes had been played when centre-back Carl Magnay's loose pass
forward went straight to Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool right winger
attempted to curl his shot into the top corner but was assisted in beating
Rhys Taylor by a deflection off Magnay that looped the ball over the
keeper.
The second goal came 29 minutes later and during the time between Chelsea
had spells in the Liverpool half but could manufacture nothing more
dangerous than a Ben Gordon far-post header which was straight forward for
the Liverpool keeper to catch.
Chelsea were showing a worrying tendency to lose the ball inside our own
half and Liverpool's centre-forward Adam Morgan had an on-target shot
blocked by a Todd Kane diving header. Then Krisztian Adorjan had a shot
tipped round the post by a fully extended Taylor after the Liverpool
midfielder had evaded challenges from George Saville and Gordon.
Stephen Sama was booked for the home side for tripping Aziz Deen-Conteh
who was in full flow and heading towards the home side's area, but Billy
Clifford was well over with the free-kick that followed.
Magnay successfully blocked a Morgan shot when Liverpool found too much
space around the Blues' box just past the half-hour mark.
On 36 minutes Chelsea were cut apart by the best move of the game.
One-touch passing from the home side saw Adorjan find Sterling with a ball
between Kane and Magnay and he squared to give Morgan a tap-in.
Chelsea avoided going three down before the interval due to good
goalkeeping from Taylor. A deflected shot from a very acute angle from
Bradley Smith had the Wales Under 21 international rapidly adjusting his
position to save.
There was a moment of hope for Chelsea before the break when Conor
Clifford lobbed a ball forward which dropped between Milan Lalkovic and
the Liverpool keeper. Lalkovic was quick enough to reach it first but was
unable to find a way past Tyrell Belford from a very difficult position.
=== Second half ===
There was almost a quick response to Dermot Drummy's half-time talk when
Magnay rose high to meet a Billy Clifford free-kick but he headed over.
The Geordie stopper's game ended soon after when he went down in pain
after a challenge, to be replaced by Daniel Pappoe.
Marko Mitrovic followed on soon after with Nathaniel Chalobah coming off,
which allowed Billy Clifford to drop into midfield and Lalkovic to use his
pace out wide.
The Slovakian did so to collect an excellently flighted Conor Clifford
pass but Mitrovic was tackled when trying to make something from
Lalkovic's centre. Before that Taylor again acquitted himself well, saving
a header from Conor Coady.
Liverpool looked to have scored another tap-in on 65 minutes but the
offside flag came to Chelsea's aid before at the other end, Andre Wisdom
headed off the Liverpool line after Saville had challenged their keeper to
a high cross. In truth the Reds' centre-back had always looked likely to
prevent a goal.
Liverpool did add their third on 69 minutes with a slick passing move
that saw Sterling thread a pass through the heart of Chelsea's defence for
midfielder Coady to guide home.
Chelsea pulled our goal back with 13 minutes to go, Billy Clifford
spotting Kane's charge forward down the right wing. The full-back drilled
a low ball into the six-yard box to where Kaby was able to slide the ball
under the keeper. It was a well-crafted goal.
It would have been an interesting last few minutes had Conor Clifford been
a couple of yards closer with his free-kick attempt from 20 yards out, but
although the likes of Saville and the two Cliffords had made their
presence more felt in midfield in the second half, there can be no
complaints about the final score.
Just before the final whistle, Pappoe, recently back from injury, went
down in pain and was helped off the pitch.
=== The manager ===
'It was a disappointing afternoon in that we didn't play out from the back
very well, we were pressured into mistakes and all round as a team we were
second to the ball,' said reserve team manager Dermot Drummy.
'Liverpool were by far the better side in the first half. In the second
half with the introduction of Danny Pappoe we were winning more aerial
balls and were putting them under pressure, but at 3-0 up Liverpool are
going to lift their foot off the gas a little and our goal was no more
than a consolation.
'I switched Milan Lalkovic out wide in the second half because Liverpool
were overlapping down the wings and Milan can get in behind teams but he
also works hard to track back, and we weren't doing that in the first
half. Todd Kane was getting isolated but we tightened that up a bit in the
second half.
'With our injuries Carl Magnay is out for maybe six weeks, he has damaged
a ligament but Danny Pappoe should be okay we hope, his is just a jar.'
