SUCCESS ALL ROUND FOR YOUNG BLUES
Posted on: Thu 10 Nov 2011
It was a Thursday night of victories and clean sheets for Chelsea players
in international action including Josh McEachran as part of an England
Under 21 side that hammered Iceland 5-0.
The Chelsea midfielder played the first 78 minutes of the European
Championship qualifier at Colchester, in which Stuart Pearce's side, who
were 1-0 up at the interval and added a second on 58 minutes, scored three
times in the last five minutes.
France Under 21s beat Romania 3-0 at home, Gael Kakuta playing the first
63 minutes and going off with his side 1-0 to the good in another
qualifier.
The goals kept flowing as Spain took on Estonia at home and ran out 6-0
winners. They were 3-0 up when Oriol Romeu, who has graduated to this age
group this season, was substituted on 57 minutes.
Three Chelsea Academy products were also successful at Under 19 level when
England scored late on to beat Denmark 1-0 in Brighton.
Nathaniel Chalobah was part of an unbreached central defence which was
added to by half-time substitute Todd Kane who impressed at right-back,
and Aziz Deen-Conteh who came on at left-back on 72 minutes. Behind them,
Jamal Blackman was introduced in goal on 59 minutes.

INTERNATIONALS: BLUES APPROACH EURO ZONE
Posted on: Fri 11 Nov 2011
Petr Cech and Raul Meireles helped put their nations in good positions to
qualify for Euro 2012 following Friday evening's qualification play-off
first legs.
Cech, complete with new nose-mask addition to his protective headgear,
duly took his place between the posts for Czech Republic for their home
game against Montenegro and made a wonderful save early in the second half
with the score 0-0.
The Czech team went ahead on 63 minutes through Vaclav Pilar of Viktoria
Plzen before they gave themselves a significant advantage to take into
Tuesday's away leg by netting a second in the 92nd minute. Besiktas player
Tomas Sivok was the scorer.
Portugal earned a 0-0 draw away to Bosnia and Herzegovina, dominating the
first half but then coming under pressure from the home side who did not
take a good chance to win the tie near the end.
Meireles had a half-volley saved early in the game by Stoke keeper Asmir
Begovic and another effort stopped seven minutes before his 82nd-minute
substitution.
Florent Malouda remained on the bench during France's 1-0 friendly win
against the United States in Paris.
European Under 21 Championship qualifiers continued of Friday and
centre-back Tomas Kalas, currently on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, played for
Czech Republic U21s and helped them remain top of their group with a 2-0
away win in Armenia.

INTERNATIONALS: THREE CONTINENTS, THREE DIFFERENT RESULTS
Posted on: Sat 12 Nov 2011
Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole tasted victory in the latest internationals,
Salomon Kalou was involved in a draw but there was defeat for Juan Mata,
Fernando Torres and Branislav Ivanovic.
Chelsea's England players will have the bragging rights over our Spaniards
when they return to Cobham next week after a Lampard goal decided
Saturday's friendly at Wembley.
The captain for the night continued his recent run of headed goals by
scoring from a matter of centimetres shortly after half-time when a Darren
Bent header from a free-kick bounced off the inside of a post. It was his
23rd England goal on the occasion of his 90th appearance. He played 57
minutes of the latest game.
There were no Chelsea players in the Spain line up at the start but Juan
Mata was introduced at half-time and he was joined on 63 minutes by
Fernando Torres.
David Villa hit the post on 72 minutes and Cesc Fabregas had two late
chances not taken as Spain applied pressure towards the end, with Mata
prominent, but England defended well and in numbers with Cole playing the
full 90 minutes of 93rd appearance.
Daniel Sturridge will have to wait longer to make his full England debut.
Like John Terry he remained on the bench.
'It is great to beat Spain, 'Lampard said after the game. 'They are
without doubt the best team in the world and they had a lot of possession
and chances but we showed a real spirit. We are not quite yet where we
want to be. We know we have to improve but to beat them is a big thing.'
Salomon Kalou began Ivory Coast's match away in South Africa as one of the
substitutes and was not introduced until the 77th minute of a game which
was billed as the Nelson Mandela Challenge match.

Kalou
By that stage both goals had been scored. Ivory Coast were handed a
first-half lead by an own goal but the South Africans equalised with a
free-kick on 53 minutes. Didier Drogba was unavailable due to a recent
surgical procedure on his arm.
South Africa failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations which starts
in January, as did Nigeria who on Saturday played their first game under
new coach Stephen Keshi. It was 0-0 draw against Botswana with the game
played in Benin, however John Mikel Obi played no part.
He reported for international duty but did not train due to injury and
Keshi has also ruled the Chelsea midfielder out of a second friendly next
week, against Zambia.
Branislav Ivanovic played the full 90 minutes of Serbia's 2-0 defeat away
in Mexico, Javier Hernandez bagging a brace. Serbia and Man City's
Aleksandar Kolarov was sent off late on.

INTERNATIONALS: MIXED RESULTS FOR UNDER 21S
Posted on: Tue 15 Nov 2011
There were plenty of Chelsea players in action in Monday's European Under
21 Championship qualifiers. Oriol Romeu and Conor Clifford enjoyed the
best nights.
Spain go marching on in their group. They made it five wins out of five
with a 3-0 home victory over Switzerland. That was already the score at
half-time when Romeu was replaced.
Clifford played all but the last four minutes of Republic of Ireland Under
21s' 2-0 home win over Liechtenstein that leaves them three points behind
pace-setters Italy in their group.
Josh McEachran played the whole of England Under 21s' match away to
Belgium but after four wins from their first four qualifiers, the run came
to an end as the Belgians came from behind to take the three points.
Stuart Pearce's side scored inside the first quarter of an hour through
Liverpool's Martin Kelly and McEachran was involved in setting up a good
chance for a second which wasn't taken, but two goals in the last 20
minutes by the home side secured a 2-1 victory. England still lead their
group by four points from Monday night's opponents.
Also on a losing side was Patrick van Aanholt who came on in the 72nd
minute of the Netherlands home defeat to Scotland. All the goals in a 2-1
scoreline had gone in by the time our left-back entered the action. The
Dutch now have a single-point lead over the Scots at the top of their
group.
Slovakia Under 21s were 1-0 down in France when they replaced Milan
Lalkovic on 55 minutes. The match ended 2-0. Gael Kakuta was not involved
for the French who sit six points ahead of second-placed Slovakia having
played a game more.
On-loan goalkeeper Matej Delac was an unused sub for Croatia Under 21s as
they triumphed 4-0 at home to Estonia. Croatia are in Spain's group where
they sit third, nine points off the pace.

DAVID LUIZ AT THE DOUBLE FOR BRAZIL
Posted on: Tue 15 Nov 2011
David Luiz played the full 90-minutes for Brazil as they cruised to a
comfortable 2-0 win against Egypt in Doha.
The Blues' central defender lined up at the heart of the Brazilian
back-four alongside AC Milan's Thiago Silva, and the pair were seldom
troubled in what was a straightforward win for the five-time world
champions.
Brazil manager Mano Manezes made some high-profile changes to his side,
leaving out big names such as Kaka, Neymar and Marcelo, but it was a
convincing performance from what was a fairly new-look team.
A goal in each half from Valencia's Jonas secured the win; the youngster's
first ever goals for the national side.
David Luiz completed his second successive full game for Brazil, having
also played the whole game in last Thursday's 2-0 win over Gabon.

INTERNATIONALS: TWO THROUGH, TWO NEW
Posted on: Tue 15 Nov 2011
Raul Meireles and Petr Cech both booked their places at Euro 2012 after
victories for Portugal and Czech Republic in their respective play-off
second legs.
Midfielder Meireles played the first 63 minutes as he helped his nation on
their way to a 6-2 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, going close to opening
the scoring before Cristiano Ronaldo did exactly that with a well-struck
free-kick.
The score was 3-1 when the Chelsea man was withdrawn with 27 minutes
remaining in Lisbon.
A Petr Jiracek goal confirmed a place in Ukraine and Poland for the
Czechs, who ran out 3-0 aggregate winners against Montenegro, meaning two
clean sheets for Chelsea man Cech.
The 29-year-old made one key save early in the second half from Dejan
Damjanovic, pushing his shot onto the crossbar, and two further stops from
Mirko Vucinic to guarantee his side's place in the last 16.
That pair now join club colleagues from Spain, England and France in next
summer's finals, with each of those teams in friendly action this evening.
There was an England debut for substitute Daniel Sturridge, who appeared
for the final 32 minutes at Wembley, where Sweden were beaten 1-0 by the
hosts thanks to a deflected Gareth Barry header.
John Terry returned to captain the side having been an unused sub on
Saturday, but Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole dropped to the bench and did
not appear.
It has not been a successful international break for the Spanish pair of
Juan Mata and Fernando Torres. They drew 2-2 against Costa Rica tonight,
Mata playing the first half, Torres the final 18 minutes as a replacement.
That was also the playing time given to Florent Malouda, who was a sub as
France drew 0-0 at home to Belgium in Paris. Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea's
summer-signed goalkeeper who is on loan at Atletico Madrid was another to
make his full international debut, keeping a clean sheet for Belgium. He
was given a comfortable introduction by a France side that manufactured
few shots on-target.
