YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 4 FULHAM 2
Posted on: Sat 12 Nov 2011
The Under 18s' improvement in results continued on Saturday at Cobham as
they made it three wins in the last four games with some quality finishing
in an entertaining and well-balanced encounter.
For the second weekend running, the side that had been sitting top of the
league table was beaten by Adi Viveash's side. It was Chelsea with the
upper hand in the first half, goals from John Swift and a Lewis Baker
penalty giving the young Blues a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Fulham improved in the second half and equalised but a good display in
goal from Jamal Blackman and two goals from substitute Alex Kiwomya
(pictured) won the day.
Lucas Piazon, the Brazilian Under 17 international whom Chelsea reached
agreement to sign back in March, made his competitive debut on the
right-hand side of the front three and played the first half. He had one
shot deflected over.
Chelsea found the net for the opener on 24 minutes. Amin Affane had a hand
in three of his side's goals and it was his corner that was headed in by
John Swift, scorer of the only goal against West Ham in the previous game.
Fulham equalised on 35 minutes and it was the first of two goals for
Buomesca Na Bangna who until last month was a Chelsea player. He raced
through the home defence and finished well but Chelsea regained the lead
six minutes before the break, Lewis Baker scoring from the penalty spot
after Affane was fouled. The half-time lead was deserved.
In the second half Fulham piled on a lot of pressure and Chelsea were more
on the back foot.
Blackman, fresh from a second-half appearance for England Under 19s on
Thursday, made a good case to be man of the match with several excellent
saves. The first, after 58 minutes, was a double stop to deny Cayley
Woodrow and Na Bangna.
That was a warning and on 61 minutes Fulham did make it 2-2 with a counter
attack. Na Bangna's shot deflected in off right-back Alistair Gordon. It
was an end-to-end match which at that stage could have easily gone either
way.
Blackman made another fine stop from Lyle Della-Verde and Chelsea went
straight up the other end of the pitch for schoolboy striker Kiwomya to
make it 3-2 from a good Baker through ball.
The game was made safe in the 88th minute by Kiwomya, his a composed
finish from six yards after a fine, lofted pass by Affane. It was
Kiwomya's sixth goal of the season from a total of three starts and four
sub appearances.
Chelsea had taken our best chances whereas too often for the visitors when
well-placed, Blackman was in their way.
'I'm really pleased as we played some outstanding football,' said youth
team manager Adi Viveash.
'Certainly the first half was the best I've seen all season. We played
very well last week at West Ham but today we controlled the game in the
first half and I was impressed with the way we changed our tempo on the
ball throughout.
'We were clinical at finishing which was the important thing but all
credit to Fulham, for the first 20 minutes of the second half they caused
us problems. Overall it was a highly entertaining game.'
