RESERVES REPORT: CHELSEA 1 SWANSEA CITY 1
Posted on: Mon 21 Nov 2011
== Summary ==
Chelsea reserves came from behind at home to Swansea on Monday afternoon,
as Ryan Bertrand scored a late leveller to earn a point.
The England Under 21 left-back burst into the visitors' area 10 minutes
from time before coolly finishing after he had been put in on goal by
Kaby, cancelling out Stephen Dobbie's penalty that had come only a matter
of minutes earlier after Sam Hutchinson had tripped Leroy Lita inside the
area.
It was a busy end to a low-key second half in which both sides had
struggled to create goalscoring opportunities, though Romelu Lukaku had
missed a header when well positioned.
Either team could have been a couple of goals to the good in the first
half, though neither goalkeeper had been overworked, and so a point can be
considered a fair result.
== Team news ==
Coach Dermot Drummy was able to pick an attack-minded line-up featuring
Romelu Lukaku in the central striking role with Brazilian Lucas Piazon
making a competitive reserve debut from the left flank.
Full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Todd Kane would also offer offensive options,
while Nathaniel Chalobah stepped into deep midfield with George Saville
operating alongside Hutchinson in central defence, those two charged with
marking powerful Swansea forward Leroy Lita.
== First half ==
It was Lita who created the game's first real opening, as late as the 20th
minute. Robbing Chalobah in possession he ran hard at the Chelsea defence
and having had his shot blocked by Saville he squared for team-mate Andrea
Orlandi who shot narrowly wide.
A minute later the same pair combined in reverse order and Lita should
have scored, only for Saville to again block the shot and concede a
corner. Stephen Dobbie then shot straight at Rhys Taylor as the visitors
continued to pressurise.
Chelsea were soon up to speed though and at the other end Piazon's
forward run and low cross almost found Lukaku, who soon afterwards did get
a look at goal only for Swansea keeper Gerhard Tremmel to save well at his
near post. Billy Clifford then had an effort blocked by a defender as the
chance count was brought level.

Chalobaha and Piazon both shot on target from distance, and then Saville
stroed forward from the back, exchanging passes with Piazon before
beating two challenges and shooting, the only disappointment of an
enterprising run being that Tremmel was able to comfortably save the shot.
In injury time, Swansea felt they should have had a penalty when the ball
struck Kane's arm inside the area, and then Chelsea should probably have
taken the lead when Bertrand crossed low towards Lukaku and a scramble
ensued, the ball just evading both the Belgian and Piazon who was also
bearing down.
== Second half ==
Taylor kept out a deflected Dobbie effort while Lukaku bent over from
range as both sides struggled to carve out further opportunities.
Drummy will have been delighted with his side's apparently newfound
solidity, this following up a clean sheet a fortnight earlier against
Norwich after four straight defeats.
Kane and Milan Lalkovic linked up, the English Under 19 full-back
crossing for Lukaku who should have done better with a free header but did
not manage to find the target.

Chelsea reserves v Swansea
It was a miss that would come back to bite the Blues, as a first defensive
slip of the game was punished. Lita got free from Hutchinson and Saville
and bore down on goal, just taking a clip on the ankles from the Chelsea
skipper before hitting the deck.
The referee pointed to the spot and Dobbie despatched it with confidence,
low into the corner past an outstretched Taylor.
Bertrand forced an outstanding save from Tremmel when he rose to meet a
Lalkovic cross, and it would be the same player to net Chelsea's equaliser
just into the final 10 minutes.
Kaby slipped the left-back in through the channel and the England Under 21
man made no mistake, calmly stroking the ball into the bottom corner for a
deserved leveller.
Saville made one more block from Lita at the end but neither keeper would
be called into further action meaning the spoils shared and a second game
unbeaten for the Blues.
