YOUTH TEAM REPORT: FULHAM 2 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Tue 17 Jan 2012
Chelsea manager Adi Viveash and his young side were left to rue a host of
missed opportunities as we were beaten 2-1 by local neighbours Fulham at
Motspur Park.
Two second half goals by Swedish striker Muamer Tankovic put the home side
firmly in the ascendancy, and while we did pull one back through Anjur
Osmanovic, it was too late to make a real difference.
With his team having played 120 minutes in our FA Youth Cup win against
Norwich last Wednesday, Viveash decided to make changes to the side
accordingly.
John Swift was replaced by the returning Osmanovic in midfield, while at
the back, Alistair Gordon came in for the injured Daniel Pappoe.
There was little goalmouth action at either end in the opening exchanges,
with most of the good build-up play from midfield breaking down in the
final third.
The obvious understanding between Nathaniel Chalobah and Todd Kane, who
was playing in a more advanced role than usual, was proving to be our most
dangerous outlet, and the Fulham defence had to be alert on more than one
occasion to clear Kane's crosses from the right.
It was Chalobah who had the first real attempt on goal in the ninth
minute, shooting low and hard from outside the penalty area, but it was
comfortable enough for Jesse Joronen in the Fulham goal.
Lucas Piazon then embarked on a threatening run down the left-hand side,
evading three Fulham defenders before being brought down just outside the
box, but the resulting free kick amounted to nothing.
On the half-hour mark, Piazon and Kane then combined, but the Brazilian,
under pressure from Sean Kavanagh, failed to connect with Kane's cross to
the back post.
Charles Banya came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute for
the hosts when, with an open goal at his mercy, he could only divert his
point-blank header over the top of the cross bar, to the utter amazement
of everybody watching.
It was a let off for the Blues but as the half drew to a close we enjoyed
our best spell of the game. First, Islam Feruz fired wide when he should
have done better after being released by Kane, while only a few minutes
later the striker missed another fantastic opportunity from close-range.
In the final minute of the half some clever play by Osmanovic released
Kane; the youngster took it early but as the net looked set to bulge,
Joronen made a brilliant save down to his right. Nathan Ake rose highest
to meet Piazon's corner, only to see his effort cleared off the line.
Swift replaced Lewis Baker at the break for Chelsea in the middle of the
park, and we started the second half brightly. Chalobah should have scored
when he was through on goal in the 50th minute, but the captain could only
manage to scuff his effort harmlessly wide.
It was an opportunity we were made to pay for two minutes later when
Fulham took the lead. A neat exchange of passes on the edge of our box
culminated with the simplest of chances for the impressive Tankovic, and
as Blackman attempted to narrow the angle, the striker calmly slotted it
home.
Viveash, recognising the tiredness in some of his players, then replaced
Gordon and Archange Nkumu with Alex Davey and Nortei Nortey, but while
initially the substitutions appeared to galvanise us, with Kane missing
two fantastic chances, Fulham doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute.
After a Chelsea attack broke down in the opposing half, the home side
broke quickly, and with the Blues short on numbers at the back, Omri
Altman crossed to the far post where Tankovic directed his header past
Blackman to make it 2-0.
The striker, undoubtedly high on confidence following his brace, had a
chance to put the game beyond doubt shortly after, but Nathan Ake was on
hand to clear the danger.
We pulled one back to set up a tense finish in the 82nd minute, when
Kane's low cross from wide on the right was easily converted by the
onrushing Osmanovic.
In the dying minutes, however, we almost fell further behind when
Tankovic, looking for his hat-trick, struck the post with Blackman rooted
to the spot.
As the clock ticked down we pushed forward to try and steal a point, but
as had been the case for most of the match, our final ball just wasn't
good enough.
It was a difficult game, but it was certainly entertaining, with both
teams trying to play in the right manner. A clearly disappointed Viveash
spoke about his side's wastefulness in front of goal.
'There was a lot of endeavour, but I'm a bit disappointed because the
tempo we played with in the last 20 minutes, when we were 2-0 down, was
how we should have been playing for the whole match.
'We missed numerous chances again which is frustrating, but there were
some positives to take,' he said. 'Nortei Nortey has played his first game
since July so it's great to see him back involved, and Anjur Osmanovic got
90 minutes under his belt, and scored a goal, so that was good for him.
'Even at 2-1 the chances were coming thick and fast, but maybe our
decision making in the final third wasn't great.'
