RESERVES IN BIRMINGHAM STALEMATE
Posted on: Mon 30 Jan 2012
Sam Hutchinson made his return from injury this afternoon for the reserves
in a friendly against Birmingham City at Cobham.
The 22-year-old, who has been out with a groin problem picked up in the
3-2 defeat against Wycombe two weeks ago, captained the side in what was a
largely uneventful 0-0 draw.
Hutchinson, who was an unused substitute for the first team in matches
against Wolves, Portsmouth and Sunderland prior to his setback, played the
full 90 minutes in central defence, marshalling the back four impressively
and seldom looking troubled.
There were few clear-cut opportunities in the game itself, with the best
chance falling to Blues midfielder Conor Clifford midway through the
second half, who could only fire straight at the keeper when through on
goal.
Manager Dermot Drummy was pleased with his side's defensive display, and
reserved praise for the way in which the visitors approached the match.
'I thought Birmingham were very good,' he said. 'They tried to play and
caused us a few problems, it was a real physical test as well because they
had some strong players.
'It's always nice to get a clean sheet; we work a lot on attacking
football and because of that we do concede goals, but it was very pleasing.
'Obviously Sam Hutchinson is a great talker and James Ashton had a run out
at right-back, I also moved Todd Kane back there late on so it was an
experienced back four.'
The manager went on to speak about the importance of the youngsters
getting game time under their belts, while paying tribute to one
particular player who has moved on to pastures new.
'If you go more than six days without a game, the players are going mad
and so are we,' said Drummy. 'You need a game to work towards, Rohan Ince
didn't play at Norwich last week so needed a game, while Hutchinson also
needed a match to help with the first team.
'We all wish Kaby [Aliu Djalo] well; he's gone to AEL Limassol in Cyprus,
he's been a fantastic player for us, I've worked with him for three years
and he's one of those lads who always has a smile on his face, very
vibrant. He's a very good ball player and I've no doubt he will find his
way in the game.'
