RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 3 FULHAM 2
Posted on: Mon 20 Feb 2012
=== Summary ===
A great result and an impressive performance by Dermot Drummy's side which
saw us deservedly take all three points. Having gone in front early on
through Romelu Lukaku, we failed to kick on and were made to pay just
before half time when Fulham equalised through Kerim Frei.
Ismail Seremba scored from close-range to put us back in front eight
minutes into the second half but Fulham, to their credit, responded well,
and were level again when Patjim Ksami scored with a left-footed drive.
A minute later, we regained the lead when debutant Patrick Bamford was
brought down for a penalty, and the youngster dusted himself off to
restore our lead with what turned out to be the winning goal.
=== Best moment ===
In what was a highly entertaining game there were plenty of stand-out
moments, but our opening goal was a joy to watch. Conor Clifford's defence
splitting pass found his namesake Billy, who took one touch before curling
his delivery into the path of Lukaku, who delicately pushed the ball past
Csaba Somogyi into the bottom corner.
=== Team news ===
With Jamal Blackman travelling as part of the first team squad to Naples,
Dermot Drummy named James Russell as goalkeeper for the local derby. Aziz
Deen-Conteh captained the side, while Romelu Lukaku was the focal point of
a front three, flanked by Jeremie Boga and our latest acquisition Patrick
Bamford, who made his full debut for the club.
=== First half ===
It was an impressive start by the Blues which we were rewarded for in the
third minute, when a delightful pass by Conor Clifford released Billy
Clifford in the right-hand channel and his ball across the face of the
Fulham goal was finished cooly by Romelu Lukaku.
Two minutes later and our lead was almost doubled, but Bamford could only
shoot tamely at Somogyi in the Fulham goal when clean through.
An early injury to Conor Clifford saw Drummy forced into the first
substitution of the afternoon, Ismail Seremba came on to play out wide on
the right with Billy Clifford moving into a more central role alongside
Jacob Mellis.
Fulham were almost level shortly after when the ball was neatly worked
down the left-hand side, but as it broke to Ksami his shot whistled inches
past the post.
It was end-to-end stuff and not lacking in entertainment, but the
impressive defensive organisation of both teams ensured there were few
clear-cut opportunities in front of goal.
Ksami then tested Russell for the first time of the game with a dipping
free kick, but the goalkeeper was equal to it and saved well, tipping
behind for a corner.
The visitors should have been level in the 36th minute when Ryan Williams
was put clean through on goal with no defenders in sight. The Fulham
winger, though, inexplicably went for style over substance and attempted a
delicate chip which Russell comfortably caught.
Fulham really began to apply the pressure as the half drew to a close, and
both Russell and Deen-Conteh made last-gasp clearances to keep us in the
ascendancy.
With almost the last kick of the first half, however, their pressure
eventually told, and after conceding a needless free kick on the edge of
our box, Frei stepped up and fired his strike past Russell to equalise.
=== Second half ===
Nortei Nortey was introduced for the Blues at the break at the expense of
Mellis, with the substitute slotting in at right-back and James Ashton
moving into a defensive midfield role.
Jeremy Boga had a great chance to put us back in front a few minutes
later, but as the ball fell into his path just outside the penalty area he
could only manage to fizz his effort just past the upright.
Our early pressure soon paid off, however, and when Deen-Conteh's cross
from the left was headed against the post by Bamford, Seremba reacted
quickest to prod home from close-range.
Fulham continued to threaten, looking dangerous every time they attacked,
and it wasn't long before they were level once again.
Some intelligent play down the left saw the ball worked in to Ksami on the
edge of the box, and the striker let fly with an absolute thunderbolt
which gave Russell no chance.
Fulham, in truth, deserved their equaliser, but almost from the restart we
were back in front. A clever pass released Bamford and as he advanced into
the penalty area he was scythed down by Jack Grimmer, leaving the referee
with no option but to award a penalty.
Bamford, clearly feeling confident, opted to take the kick himself, and
though Somogyi did well to get a hand to it, there was too much power
behind the strike and Chelsea were back in front.
Alex Kiwomya was introduced for the substitute Seremba shortly after and
almost extended our lead with his first touch, racing on to a wonderful
flighted pass from Clifford, only to see his powerful drive palmed away by
Somogyi.
As the game drew to a close, it was the Blues who looked more dangerous,
and Lukaku really should have sealed the three points when he was slipped
in by Kiwomya, but having beaten his marker the Belgian fired wide when he
should have at least tested the keeper.
Fortunately, the referee sounded the final whistle soon after and the
points were secure, leaving the manager to pay tribute to his players.
'It was an absolutely fantastic performance in terms of spirit and boys
playing for the shirt I thought, out of adversity these boys have learnt
that if you run beyond and you work as a team you get your just rewards,'
said Drummy.
'James [Ashton] was only supposed to play 60 minutes, we wanted to give
Alex [Kiwomya] 20 minutes to see if he's okay for the youth team for
Wednesday, James played a holding role in the second half, football
intelligence is so vital but Jeremy Boga and Billy Clifford showed good
discipline today because we were under pressure.
Bamford impressed on his debut for the club and scored the winner, but
while his goal will steal the headlines, Drummy has been even more
impresses with his approach away from the field of play.
'He's a great lad, he's applied himself and already you can see the boys
have taken to him, he works hard, he's very strong and his anticipation
for chances is impressive,' admitted Drummy. 'He looks a good prospect, but the nicest thing for me is that he wants to apply himself.'
