YOUTH CUP REPORT: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 3 CHELSEA 4
Posted on: Thu 23 Feb 2012
Our Academy Under 18 side capped a magical fightback at the City Ground to
beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 after going in at half time 3-0 down.
Lucas Piazon hauled us back into the game, before an Islam Feruz brace
brought us level. Substitute Alex Kiwomya put the seal on a memorable
night with the winner three minutes from time.
Following an impressive performance by his side in last week's fifth round
victory over West Ham United, Blues manager Adi Viveash made only one
change, with Reece Mitchell replacing Anjur Osmanovic who was the only
member of the starting 11 from last week to feature in Saturday's league
defeat against Southampton.
The first real opportunity of the game came when Lucas Piazon and Amin
Affane exchanged clever passes just inside the Nottingham Forest half. The
Brazilian advanced unchallenged into the penalty area but he was nudged
off the ball by Jamaal Lascelles just as he was about to pull the trigger.

Jamal Blackman
Jamal Blackman, who travelled with the first team to Naples for
yesterday's game, had to be alert to save well from a curling Ben Osborn
effort moments later at the other end, while from the resulting goal kick,
Piazon was again allowed to run from deep only to see his left-footed
strike bounce back off the post.
After a cagey opening few minutes, the game had really opened up and it
was end-to-end stuff with both teams looking to gain an early advantage.
A goal had been coming, but unfortunately for the Blues it was the home
side who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, when the ball sat up
perfectly for midfielder David Morgan who unleashed an unstoppable drive
past the outstretched Blackman from outside the penalty area.
The goal appeared to galvanise the home side and we were struggling to
retain possession as they set about us, refusing to let us settle on the
ball.
Reece Mitchell had a great opportunity to equalise but blazed high over
the bar from inside the box, while the goalscorer Morgan tested Blackman
from long-range with a dipping free kick.
It was Mitchell in the thick of the action shortly after again when a
wayward throw-in ran into his path only yards from goal, only for the
youngster to lose his footing at the critical moment allowing Forest to
clear the danger.
Adam Nditi became the first player to enter the referee's book when he was
shown a yellow card for a late lunge on Kieran Wallace, and from the
resulting free kick the hosts doubled their advantage.
An inswinging delivery by Jack Blake was met by Lascelles who directed it
goalwards, only for Nathan Ake to get the final touch and put the home
side in control of the tie in the 36th minute.
It had been a poor first half display, and while Piazon almost hauled us
back into the game straight from the restart, unbelievably it was 3-0 four
minutes before the break.
Again, the Blues failed to clear a set-piece delivery, and when the ball
fell to Jordan Palmer-Samuels with his back to goal, the forward showed
fantastic improvisation to back-heel his effort into the bottom corner.
Archange Nkumu replaced Mitchell at the break in a tactical switch by
Viveash, with the substitute moving into central defence and Nathaniel
Chalobah bolstering a midfield that had been overrun in the first half.
The switch paid off almost instantly after a steady flow of Blues
pressure. John Swift cleverly released Piazon (pictured below), who
skilfully came back inside his marker before firing past Dimitar Evtimov
at the near post to give us some hope.

Piazon
Nditi had a wonderful chance to really turn the game on its head a couple
of minutes later but, following an impressive surging burst he lacked the
composure when it mattered most and sent his shot high over the bar.
It was a decent response, however, but while we poured forward at every
given opportunity, gaps at the back inevitably began to open up, and
Wallace almost put the game out of reach only to drag his strike inches
wide of Blackman's left-hand post.
With just over 20 minutes remaining we really were back in the game, as
the ball fell into the path of Islam Feruz (pictured below) following a
quick break, he opted against releasing Lewis Baker and fired into the
bottom corner to silence a fervent home crowd and send the travelling away
support delirious.

Islam Feruz
We began to impose ourselves on the game more as we sensed an opening, and
we didn't have to wait long to be rewarded. Kane's corner from the right
evaded everybody, and it was the smallest player on the pitch Feruz who
headed home from close-range to cap an amazing, gutsy fightback from
Viveash's youngsters.
Sensing the initiative was ours, Viveash replaced Amin Affane with the
fresh legs of Alex Kiwomya, and soon after we were almost in front, but
when Feruz reacted quickest to meet a deflected Kane strike, he could only
shoot straight at Evtimov from point-blank range.
As the clock ticked down, the game ebbed and flowed with both teams
looking to steal a late winner and set up a two-legged semi-final meeting
with Manchester United or Charlton, and it was that man Feruz coming close
again, ironically with another header, but this time it sailed wide.
With only three minutes left to spare, though, our comeback was complete.
Evtimov failed to hold Lewis Baker's strike, and the substitute Kiwomya
showed fantastic predatory instincts to pounce and stab home from
close-range, with the manager understandably struggling to contain his
emotions on the sidelines.

Kiwomya
Forest threw everything at us in the dying minutes as they looked to force
extra-time, but some desperate, resolute defending ensured we held on to
seal the most memorable of victories.
The match epitomised the old adage of football being a game of two halves,
and Viveash admitted that a tactical switch at the break had played a
major part in the turnaround, while paying tribute to the eventual
matchwinner.
'It's another great night and this has been the most unbelievable of them
all. In the first half we were totally dominated in midfield, we were
outfought and they were first to every ball, they had great drive about
them, real belief and we couldn't cope with it, simple as that,' he said.
'We went in at half time 3-0 down, staring down a barrel. But you can go
one of two ways, you can either make a game of it or you can get a hiding.
I know my players and I know they will have been disappointed with how
they played [in the first half] and I told them that. A few harsh words
needed to be said, it hasn't been needed so far in this competition but it
was tonight and that's my job.
'The three chances we carved out in the first half gave me belief, I said
we needed a goal in the first ten minutes and we scored one in seven. We
could have had three before that, the change to get Archange on and push
Chalobah into midfield gave us power and we started to win tackles, we
were winning all the 50-50s, they were on the back foot, it's a tidal
wave, that's what goals do, they give you belief.
'Obviously the second and third are quality goals, then we had Alex
Kiwomya who's a great sub to have, his pace is a tremendous threat, he can
play out wide or down the middle, he got 20 minutes for the reserves on
Monday and that was vital for his preparation. It's a great night for him,
he comes on and gets the winner but I was very pleased with the way we
switched the play as that's what we spoke about in the build-up.'
