YOUTH REPORT: ARSENAL 2 CHELSEA 3

The Under 18s returned to winning ways in the league this weekend with an
excellent display against strong local rivals, twice coming from behind.
The victories in 2012 for Adi Viveash's side have all been in the FA Youth
Cup but two goals from Amin Affane (pictured) and one from Patrick
Bamford, on his youth team debut, secured three league points for the
first time since the turn of the year.
The Arsenal side were older in terms of having more second years and they
played their part in what was a physical and high-level youth game.
The Gunners, who had missed a very early chance, scored after just eight
minutes when Chelsea didn't react quickly enough to a rapid interchange of
passes in the middle of the park and Josh Rees scored.
From 10 minutes onwards however, Chelsea played extremely well and got our
passing game going. Affane scored a great equaliser with a 30-yard shot
into the top corner with his side well on top.
Bamford, the January signing from Nottingham Forest who was cup-tied for
Wednesday's Youth Cup team but scored for the reserves on Monday, had a
couple of chances and Nathan Ake headed over when well-placed at a set
piece.
However despite the good response from Chelsea, Arsenal took the lead
again on 43 minutes when the visitors got too narrow and the ball was
switched to the right wing and crossed for Jordan Wynter to score.
So the Blues were 2-1 down at half-time but equalised soon after Walter
Figueira came on early in the second half for John Swift. Full-back Nortei
Nortey played the substitute in behind the Arsenal defence with a nice
pass through and Nortey crossed first time. Affane doubled his tally for
the match and made it four for the season with a volley into the ground
that went over the keeper.
The game then ebbed and flowed and Figueira had a really good chance but
the Arsenal keeper made a good save.
Another reshuffle put Bamford wide on the left where he had played for the
reserves and after Chelsea won the ball in midfield, a great pass by Lewis
Baker found him. Bamford had a couple of attempts to get the better of the
Gunners central defence and just when it looked like the chance had gone,
he dinked the ball to the side of the keeper and scored. Seventy-five
minutes had been played.
There were a couple of Arsenal attacks that need to be seen off before the
end but Chelsea were quite comfortable by that stage.
'It was an excellent team performance and probably the best youth game we
have been involved in this season,' reports youth team manager Adi Viveash.
'We were pleased to get Nortei Nortey through 90 minutes and he played
very well and Tom Howard was excellent as well. Alex Davey and Nathan Ake
at centre-back were both outstanding and it was good for Davey to play in
that level of youth game so quickly after his reserve game against Fulham.
He has responded in a positive matter to not making the 16 for the last
Youth Cup game. That is very difficult to take but he has responded the
way we expect by coming out fighting and that is all credit to him.
'It was a great game because both teams posed each other problems and
problem solving in football is important.
'Patrick Bamford played because he needed 90 minutes but mostly it was our
usual league game team and we showed a good level of maturity.
'The fight for a place in the Youth Cup semi-final has started already and
the players know that. In the previous rounds I have gone with players in
form. I just hope we can keep everybody fit and in form and then it will
make my selection process all the more interesting and difficult.'
