With the FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester United in
mind, Adi Viveash fielded a strong Chelsea side. Alex Davey partnered
Nathan Ake at the heart of the defence, with captain Nathaniel Chalobah
moving into midfield alongside Lewis Baker and John Swift. Islam Feruz was
the focal point of the front-three, flanked by Amin Affane and Lucas
Piazon.
The Blues were on the front foot from the first whistle and could esily
have been awarded a penalty inside the opening four minutes when Baker
appeared to be tugged back as he latched on to an intelligent flighted
pass by Chalobah, only for the referee to wave the appeals away.
A quick break moments later later almost paid dividends, but after a run
from Piazon had created space on the edge of the penalty area, a clever
back-heel by Feruz teed up Baker who sent his strike high over the bar.
It was Feruz himself who had the best chance of the game shortly after,
when he was played through on goal by a trademark Swift pass, but the
pint-sized striker opted for power over precision and fired high and wide.
Our flow of pressure eventually told after 20 minutes, when a crossfield
pass by Davey released Piazon wide on the left; the Brazilian teased his
marker before crossing for Affane to break the deadlock from close-range.
Minutes later and the game took a massive turn in our favour when Reading
were reduced to ten men, after their keeper Dean Santangelo was dismissed
for taking down Feruz with the goal at his mercy after the forward had
blocked his clearance.
The referee had no option but to point to the spot, and Baker calmly
stepped up and side-footed his strike into the bottom corner to double our
advantage and score his second goal in successive matches.
Worryingly for Viveash, Ake was forced out of the action just before the
half-hour mark, limping off to be replaced by Tom Howard.
The substitute played out wide on the right, with Affane moving into a
more central role and Chalobah switching back into central defence.
Feruz tested the sub keeper from distance for the Blues, but bad decision
making in the final third was preventing us from putting the game out of
Reading's reach.
The visitors, to their credit, had rallied since Santangelo's dismissal,
and both Davey and Chalobah were forced into last-ditch tackles as they
looked to narrow the deficit on the break.
A wonderful piece of play from Piazon just before the break saw the
playmaker exchange neat passes with Affane before bursting into the box
and evading two defenders, only to see his powerful drive well saved by
the keeper as it headed into the top corner.
Much like the first half, the second started with the Blues having what
looked like a stonewall penalty appeal denied, when Affane played a
one-two with Feruz, only to be tripped as he was about to pull the
trigger.
Todd Kane was replaced by Nortei Nortey on the hour, and while we were
enjoying plenty of possession, there was little goalmouth action to speak
of.
Reading looked to have forced their way back into the game with a cleverly
worked goal, but as the visiting supporters celebrated, their joy proved
shortlived when the linesman raised his flag to signal for offside.
Alex Kiwomya entered the action at the expense of the impressive Piazon
midway through the half, in a bid to inject some fresh energy to our play
in the final third, and the substitute almost scored with his first touch
when he used his pace to get away from the defender, only to fire over the
bar with only the keeper to beat.
Kiwomya, though, didn't have to wait long to see his name on the
scoresheet, when he made it 3-0 moments later, arriving in the box late to
convert Howard's teasing cross, albeit with the aid of the post.
In fairness to Reading they kept going and refused to cave in, looking
particularly dangerous from set-plays, but the third goal had given them a
mountain to climb, and the Blues saw out the final few minutes to ensure
we head into next Friday's game in high spirits.
