YOUTH TEAM REPORT: CARDIFF CITY 2 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Sat 21 Apr 2012
Chelsea Under 18s were left to rue a host of missed chances as we allowed
a two-goal lead to slip away at Cardiff City.
Andy Myers, who took charge for the game, had a largely inexperienced
squad of players to choose from following the FA Youth Cup final first leg
victory against Blackburn Rovers at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
Archange Nkumu captained the side, while there were also starts for the
likes of Alistair Gordon, Nortei Nortey, Anjur Osmanovic and Ismail
Seremba.
Amid blistery conditions, the Blues had the advantage of playing with the
wind in our backs in the first half, and it proved telling, with Myers's
side making a positive start.
Our build-up play was impressive, but our inability to find a killer pass
in and around the penalty area was proving to be our downfall early on.
Cardiff, to their credit, were defending stubbornly in the opening
exchanges, but it wasn't long before our pressure told.
The Blues were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box midway through
the first half and it was Anjur Osmanovic who stepped up to take it. As
the ball swung in, Nkumu reacted quickest, taking one touch to control and
another to fire into the back of the net to give us an early advantage.
With the home side on the ropes following our goal, we began to take
control, and shortly after our lead was doubled.
Tom Howard picked up possession out wide on the right-hand side from Sam
Bangora, and the winger exchanged neat passes with Reece Mitchell before
leaving the Cardiff goalkeeper with no chance from a powerful drive at the
near-post to make it 2-0.
The second half started with the hosts taking a more direct approach to
the game as they looked to hit back as quickly as possible.
Within a matter of minutes they were back in it, when some slack defending
allowed the Bluebirds' striker too much time to turn, and his effort left
Mitchell Beeney with no chance.
A half which had started badly quickly got worse for the Blues when
Cardiff were awarded a controversial penalty soon after.
Alistair Gordon was harshly adjudged to have brought down his man inside
the box, although it appeared to be little more than a coming together
between two physical players.
However, the decision had been made, and the resulting kick was dispatched
to level proceedings.
Given the nature of the equaliser and the inexperience of our players on
show, it would have been understandable had we crumbled under the pressure.
Cardiff's second, however, appeared to spark us into life during the
closing stages as we went in search of the winner, and while there were
certainly chances for us to steal it, poor decision making in the final
third saw the match end all square.
Myers, while disappointed with the fact we let a 2-0 lead slip, was
pleased overall with a spirited display under difficult circumstances.
'It was a difficult pitch but I was very pleased with the way the boys
applied themselves and some of the football we tried to play,' he said.
'They were a credit to themselves. Most of them would have been at the
Youth Cup final on Friday night supporting the other lads, it was an early
start and to go there and play the way we did was brilliant for everyone
connected with the club.
'Our Under 18s are unbeaten in a long time and the fact we had so many
school boys playing, and the way we looked to play out from the back, even
in tough conditions, was great to see.'
