Roberto Di Matteo has made it perfectly clear every member of the squad
has a part to play in the crowded closing weeks of the season, so the
return of Oriol Romeu in the previous league match was good news.
The 20-year-old Spaniard has impressed many during his first season at
Chelsea, during which he has made 22 appearances, but injury, including a
hamstring strain and then a bout of illness, meant last weekend's game at
Arsenal was his first action since the 3-3 draw against Manchester United
in the first week of February.
He returned to the starting line-up at the Emirates as eight changes were
made to the side following the gruelling home leg against Barcelona three
days earlier.
'Every player wants to play and when you are back it is good and you try
to play as well as you can,' Romeu says as he considers his return to the
team.
'There were a couple of injuries and I was not fit to play but then the
coach said to me that I was ready to play and he wanted to put me back,
and I was happy for that. Hopefully in the next games it will happen again.
'At Arsenal it was a strange game because we had many changes to the team
but we tried to do our best and I think we played well. We had chances to
win and although it was 0-0, any of the two teams could win that game.'
Although the Barcelona-nurtured midfielder wasn't used for the Champions
League second leg on Tuesday night, he was a member of the travelling
party that visited his previous club.
'I got to see a lot of friends and I saw all the people with whom I have
been working and it was good to ask how things are going. I had friends
and family at the match and it was a good chance to see them.
'It was an unbelievable game but we played well,' Romeu adds. 'We played
two amazing games and we did a good idea because you know that with
Barcelona, they always have the possession and you have to defend well,
and we defended very well and that is why we are in the Final.'
Before any thought can be given to Munich however, there are highly
important league games to negotiate, beginning today against Queens Park
Rangers, and it will be no surprise at all if Di Matteo again turns to
Romeu as he attempts to select sides fresh enough to win matches.
