Ryan Bertrand promises Chelsea: I can be the new Ashley Cole
11 May 2012 - Simon Johnson
Ashley Cole always knew the day would come when he would face competition
for his starting place at Chelsea.
For the past six years Cole has rarely missed a match in his favoured
left-back berth. And yet in the club's difficult matches at Arsenal and
Liverpool of late he looked on from the bench as an exciting young talent
played in his position.
Chelsea's transfers during the Roman Abramovich era have been dominated by
players from overseas but the reason behind everyone's, including Cole's,
excitement is that his rival and potential long-term replacement has been
groomed from their own academy.
Many youngsters have been tipped to make the breakthrough before but
22-year-old Ryan Bertrand looks a genuine prospect to have a lasting
impact on the first team.
Many have flattered to deceive since John Terry — the last proper
graduate from the youth set-up to make a place in the starting XI his own
— made his debut in 1998.
But anyone who witnessed Bertrand's man-of-the-match display in Chelsea's
0-0 draw at Arsenal last month will know he is a very promising English
talent.
It has certainly not been easy for him, though. Signed from Gillingham for
an initial £125,000 in 2005, he has been sent out on loan five times to
clubs in a lower division — a common fate for many Chelsea trainees.
With Cole naturally cemented as the first choice left-back, it would have
been easy to give up hope as he played more than 150 games for
Bournemouth, Oldham, Norwich, Reading and Nottingham Forest before finally
wearing the Chelsea blue for the first time as a substitute against
Birmingham in April last year.
Yet Bertrand has a quality, apart from his skills with a football, which
has seen him conquer all those periods of self-doubt and frustration.
He told Standard Sport: “One of my virtues as an individual and as a
player is patience. There were occasions where I wondered if it was going
to happen for me at Chelsea but you have to think of things realistically.
Obviously you have an ambition but I want to play for Chelsea and I never
wanted to let that go. Thankfully I kept at it and I'm getting a few games
now.
“There were times when I would be frustrated that I was going out on loan
again but anyone would be like that in that situation. Thankfully, I've
had my mother with me all the way and we have remained realistic. When we
speak to each other we're not confused, we're realistic about our chances.
“I have been on the right process and the club showed their faith in me
to hand out another [four-year] contract at the start of the season. It
really gave me belief and confidence.
“I'm quite grounded as a person too so when things have and do get tough,
I just have to realise why and what I'm doing all this for.”
Significantly, while Cole has provided his biggest obstacle to getting
first-team football he has also played a major role in his development.
Bertrand said: “At Chelsea you get the best training and it is fortunate
that I can learn from someone as good as Ashley. Some might say he is in
my way to playing more and in a way he is but on the other side of that I
have to learn as much as I can from the best left-back there is. I have
benefited in that way.
“Ashley gives me a lot of advice, particularly if he has been watching me
play from the bench and he will pull me to one side at half-time and talk
about a few things but also what I need to keep on doing, little things
really. He is really helpful.”
It is likely he will make his 14th appearance of the season in the club's
last league game of the season, at home against Blackburn on Sunday, with
the very real prospect of being named on the bench for the club's biggest
game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final six days later.
Bertrand, who also has international ambitions having represented England
at every level from Under-17s to the Under-21s, hopes his success can spur
on the other youngsters at the club.
Another talent, 19-year-old midfielder Josh McEachran, has seen his
development checked this season and spent the last four months on loan at
Swansea watching most of the games as a substitute.
The club are optimistic about a lot of the players who secured the FA
Youth Cup on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory on aggregate over Blackburn.
Bertrand said: “I hope what I'm doing is encouraging the others. You must
make sure you keep developing and have that bit of patience, always have
that bit of belief you're going to make it. This season has been a dream
come true, especially if I end up being on the bench for the Champions
League Final.
“But it is just the start of things to come. Next season I will come back
even better and will provide greater competition for places, which is
better for the team.”
