YOUTH REPORT: WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 2 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Sat 20 Oct 2012
Chelsea's youth side failed to win for the first time this season but
preserved their unbeaten record thanks to a second-half comeback at Wolves
on Saturday.
Twice behind, goals from Jesse Starkey, a penalty, and striker Reece
Mitchell rescued a point in the first away game of the season.
While Roberto Di Matteo's team was winning at White Hart Lane, Adi
Viveash's youngsters were in action in the West Midlands, but following a
three-hour journey were sluggish to start and fell behind early.
Wolves took the lead after a mistake in the Chelsea defence, the home
striker charging down a clearance from goalkeeper Ben Killip after a short
backpass and stroking into an empty net, but Chelsea got a hold on the
game and earned the chance to equalise when Mitchell, an ever-present this
season, was brought down inside the box for a penalty.
Starkey despatched the shot low into the goalkeeper's right-hand corner to
level the scores, and Chelsea then created a couple of chances to go in
front, a Wolves defender heading the ball off the line before the Blues
fell behind once more just before half-time following a scramble inside
the Chelsea area.
Improvement was shown in the second half as Chelsea got tighter to their
more powerful opponents, and drew level after good work from substitute
Tom Howard and Jeremie Boga to set up Mitchell for an equaliser.
Pushing on for a winner, Chelsea could have won it at the death when
Fankaty Dabo's cross was met sweetly by Jordan Houghton inside the box,
but he could only fire over the bar.
'Wolves are a physical team, a bigger side than us, stronger and a bit
older, and we hadn't played away yet this season,' Viveash said
afterwards, 'so the boys didn't know what to expect and they showed good
character and will have to get used to it.
'Wolves beat Man City 3-0 in their previous home game so they are strong
on their own patch, and I'm pleased we found out a bit more about the
boys. We now travel to City where we will be staying overnight, and that
will be another different experience, but we did well today to show
confidence and come from behind.'
