NUMBERS GROW FOR WIGAN
Posted on: Fri 08 Feb 2013
Demba Ba, David Luiz and Petr Cech will all be available to face Wigan on
Saturday afternoon, but captain John Terry misses out with injury.
Rafael Benitez reports a slight problem that will keep Terry out of action
but welcomes back David Luiz after he missed three Chelsea games, while
Cech and Ba have recovered from injuries last weekend in time to face the
Latics. Eden Hazard also returns from suspension.
'The first one is I am really pleased with the medical department, they
are doing a great job,' Benitez said. 'We have just two players injured,
Oriol Romeu, a long-term injury, and now John Terry has inflammation in
his knee. It's not serious but he will not be available tomorrow.
'David Luiz, Petr Cech and even Demba Ba will be available. With different
situations but they will be available. That is really important. We cannot
use Mikel or Victor Moses who are in the African Nations final but I am
really pleased to have two more players and more options. It is much
better.'
It leaves Benitez with a decision to make regarding his strikers, with Ba
and Fernando Torres both in contention. Asked if he would be rotating
them, the Spaniard sought to clarify the position.
'I am not rotating because I want to. We have to do it,' he said. 'Demba
Ba cannot play Europa League, we have to manage them both and see and I
have to decide. This week Demba Ba had the problem with the nose so we
have to analyse it in a different way, but that's the idea. He was
training yesterday and today, with the mask. He is fine, and we have to
make a decision.
'If we can play both sometimes we will do it but with the players behind
it will be difficult so we have to play one or the other, and it depends
on each game.'
We are without a win in four games, dating back to Arsenal's visit to
Stamford Bridge in the Barclays Premier League three weeks ago. Benitez
believes his side have generally performed well in that period, but seeks
improvement in results as we enter another busy period.
'We could win all the games we didn't win,' he said. 'It's a question of
sometimes doing the right things at the right moment, a little bit of
luck, being more clinical and not making mistakes in defence, but the team
is doing well in terms of performance. We have to improve the results,
especially in the games we were winning. We were training, practising,
analysing but also working on the pitch and that's the main things we can
do.
'We are working on the solutions. If you can score two goals and be two up
you have to finish the games, and you cannot make these mistakes. You have
to be sure you control the game.
'Every week is important for us, not just this one. We play two games a
week and have to do our best in every game. Wigan will be important too
and we start the Europa League next week. Every game will be important
until the end of the season.
'All the games are difficult; all the teams are difficult to beat. They
have won more points away and we now there is no room for complacency. We
have to do the right things from the first minute to the last minute.'

BENITEZ: LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
Posted on: Sat 09 Feb 2013
Rafael Benitez has been discussing some of the work that has gone in
behind the scenes as we look to return to winning ways against Wigan on
Saturday.
We are without a victory in four games but with fresh legs returning to
the squad after a successful international break for Chelsea players,
Benitez believes we can earn an important three points at Stamford Bridge
if individual mistakes are eradicated.
'Every game we analyse. We watch videos, talk with staff and talk with
players,' he said. 'We have some information and we try to manage it for
the next one. We were talking about how we were winning and conceded
goals, made mistakes, why?
'Why we didn't score the third goal and finish the game, why we made these
mistakes? It's something we do after every game, so I don't need time or
days without training to analyse things.
'Sometimes we have to keep the ball better. Against Reading we had the
ball, we made a substitution and then we made a silly foul and didn't
concentrate in the box. After 85 minutes we had three chances. We could
kill the game and couldn't do it. We made one mistake.
'It's different from the Newcastle counter-attack for their second goal.
It's different things. Before, the team was consistent and we were scoring
goals but in the last games we've not been managing in the right way.'
With the trio of Demba Ba, Petr Cech and David Luiz available after
injuries, and Eden Hazard back from suspension, the squad has a fresher
feel to it. Benitez does however have to check on Ba before 3pm this
afternoon.
'It's not a question of risk. He has the mask and I think he will be
fine,' said the manager. 'The question is to decide if he has enough
confidence to play at 100 per cent or not. That's our decision, talking
with him he says he is fine, and he says he has confidence. We were
practising corners and free-kicks with some balls in the air but it's not
the same. We were trying to prove, to check, but still we have to decide.'
Cech's broken finger will not prevent him from action either.
'He was training, a different training session, but he was training and
hopefully he will be fine,' Benitez reported. 'The doctor can decide how
we can control this. He was in goal and working with the goalkeeping coach
so he is fine. It's a small fracture.'
It was a midweek of celebration for our internationals, with Ashley Cole
winning his 100th cap, Cesar Azpilicueta his first, and John Mikel Obi and
Victor Moses reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final in South Africa.
Benitez look forward to their return.
'Normally when you go to an international break you cross your fingers you
don't have any injuries,' he said 'We had a lot of players involved this
week, coming back fit and that's good.
'[In Africa] every time I watch a game I see Victor Moses with a problem,
and Obi had another bad tackle. But it's good for them to be in the final,
hopefully they will win and they will come back with more confidence and
positivity.
'You want them coming back as soon as possible but if they are winning it
is good for them so they have to enjoy it, and I think it will be positive
in terms of confidence coming back. I wish them all the best on Sunday and
hopefully they can win, come back and be with us.'

sack-threat-Benitez-on-the-brink-at-Chelsea.html

One key figure said: “Roman is loyal to Benitez and desperately wants him
to stay in charge until the end of the season. But that loyalty will be
tested to the limit if Rafa fails again.
“The be-all and end-all at this club has always been that we at least
finish in the top four — and current results mean that could now be in
serious doubt. And, let's be honest, he has sacked managers for far less.”
