Numerous bosses have come and gone since the Special One departed in 2007, with Rafa Benitez the latest tactician handed the difficult job of pleasing trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich. But despite the ruthless axing of Roberto Di Matteo and an early exit from the Champions League, Le Saux does not believe it is all doom and gloom for the European champions. The 44-year-old former England international, who enjoyed two spells with the Blues, is confident Benitez has the talent at his disposal to ensure the season ends on a high. Read on for Le Saux's take on what the Spaniard must do to turn things around at Stamford Bridge. Benitez has endured somewhat of a baptism of fire, but the bottom line is it's not going too well at Chelsea... From a player's point of view, the frustration is the inconsistency. You have situations where you go away and play really well at somewhere like Stoke, beating them 4-0, which makes you think you can go on and build from that. But then you get results at home that unsettle you again. Listening to Rafa, who's got a couple of players away on international duty, it's clear that he believes the squad is still evolving. Demba Ba has come in and trying to get that consistency is vital — as it is for every team. Between now and the end of the season, the players have to got ensure they only have one thing in mind — and that's stringing a run of wins together. When Di Matteo was axed and Benitez came in, Chelsea claimed he would improve the team defensively. Where's it gone wrong? When you look at the facts and figures, then obviously the team have been uncharacteristically poor in defence. Letting a two-goal lead slip at Reading and conceding twice at home to Swansea in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final, albeit through individual error, is not what we've come to expect. But at the moment, I just think the team are in a situation where any mistakes are exposed by the opposition. When you see Chelsea play at Stamford Bridge, their opponents set up really deep — which is something teams were doing even back when I was there. They sit deep and then go and score goals on the counter-attack. That can be exciting to watch, but if you're on the receiving end it can be one of the most frustrating things in the world. Each player knows they've got a role to play in ensuring Chelsea become more consistent again — and they've got to make sure they do it. I've no doubt that all of the players will be desperate to deliver. Why are such talented players struggling to break teams down, especially at home? Chelsea are creating chances, especially in the early part of games, but they aren't being taken. That's proving as costly as the defensive mistakes. Against Brentford in the FA Cup, they had the chances and failed to take them. If you score an early goal, the team settles down and the chances contine to come. At the moment, it's a difficult one to fathom because it's so uncharacteristic of Chelsea. Is a major reason the fact that Fernando Torres is still failing to deliver? The goal he scored against Brentford was classic Torres — it was a wonderful strike to get us back in the tie. His goalscoring record this season is good, his assist record is good, but I think there's still a way for the team to play to get him involved more. That's up to the manager to find. I see the spells in the game where Torres is involved and working hard, which makes it easier for him to create something. The more he's involved, the better he is. Should Benitez throw caution to the wind and play both Torres and Ba up front? It's a question many people asked when Ba was signed in the January transfer window. It's still unclear whether they can play together, while history suggests that Benitez favours just one in attack. But having seen Chelsea against Brentford when Ba came on, after they linked up for the Torres goal, you have to ask 'why not?' It's very fashionable to play with one striker and a No10 in behind. But if you can adapt your game and give yourself two players in forward positions, then even percentage-wise you're increasing your chances of scoring. Two strikers are much more difficult to handle than one, and I think there's alway a valid argument for changing that element of your attack. Do you think Benitez actually has that freedom to change the formation? I think you just have to trust the fact that he's an experienced manager and is picking the team to win a game. He's trying to bring the best out of the players and I don't think it's right to question that. Is it time for the board to admit they made a mistake by sacking Di Matteo? No, the decision was made and I think everyone at the club tries to do things for the right reasons. The amazing thing about football is there are always surprises and it's very hard to predict the outcome. For Chelsea, I think the players realise that it's all about results. Excuse the cliche, but if you deliver on the pitch everything else falls into place. The main point from my perspective is the players must believe that they can deliver. They're certainly good enough to do just that, so it should be a case of focusing on getting the right results. -- http://fanchants.com/football-songs/chelsea-chants/we-all-follow-the-chelsea/ We All Follow The Chelsea, Over land and sea (and Leicester) We All Follow The Chelsea, Onnnntooo vi-ic-toreee... -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 114.39.150.88
