Bob was a strong running forward who would go all day. Perhaps he wasn't
the quickest fella on the pitch, but if it was a 50-yard sprint he could
keep up with anyone. He would work all game for the team, which was
something we very much appreciated about him.
Even when he was having a bad game, he would never go missing. If things
weren't happening for him, he wouldn't go and hide, not like some of the
players you see. He was the perfect team player and the consummate
professional.
He always seemed to be full of enthusiasm, no matter what was going on and
we really liked having him around. He was extremely popular in the
dressing room and that shows what sort of character he was.
He wasn't the best header of a ball. In fact, I don't think he scored many
goals with his head at all, but he had a great left foot.
I wouldn't have said he was a natural finisher as such. He wasn't a player
like Jimmy Greaves who scored a lot of his goals inside the area.
But Bob could score from all over the place because he struck the ball so
sweetly with that terrific left foot of his. I remember him scoring all
sorts of goals, just not many with his head.
He never really played in the Chelsea side in 1970 and left for Crystal
Palace that year, which is a shame, but he played and scored in the 1967
FA Cup Final against Spurs and the 1965 League Cup final we won over two
legs against Leicester City. He was still around in 1970, but he wasn't
playing as regularly as he had been.
I've been over to see him a few times in Ireland, where he has lived for
some time now. He's a lovely guy and I know he will be the first person to
congratulate Frank when he breaks his record because that's the sort of
bloke he is.
Mind you, I've already told Frank and John Terry they won't break my
all-time appearance record. I think they know they won't do it, so my
record is safe for a few more years yet.
