After making Champions League debut at 17, McEachran wants Chelsea action
after managerial revolving door stalled progress
By Simon Peach, Press Association - PUBLISHED:23:16 GMT, 28 March 2013
Josh McEachran knows his progress stalled after breaking into the Chelsea
first-team and now wants to kick on after getting his career back on track.
Playing Champions League football by the age of 17, the central midfielder
was touted as the next big thing at Stamford Bridge, where only two years
ago he was named Young Player of the Year.
However, the intervening period for McEachran has been difficult, thanks
in no small part to the managerial merry-go-round that followed the
departure of the man who fast-tracked him into the side, Carlo Ancelotti.
An unsatisfactory loan spell at Swansea last season compounded matters and
helped to throw McEachran's development off course, although things once
again are looking up looking up for him.
McEachran, still only 20, is enjoying regular football in the npower
Championship with Middlesbrough and feels he will return to Chelsea at the
end of his season-long loan a much better player.
'I was playing at Chelsea when I was 17 and was progressing but then I
stalled a little bit,' he said. 'But I've gone to Middlesbrough and been
playing every game, doing well and now I need to kick on.
'A lot of it (the stalling) was down to opportunity, really. There were a
lot of things happening at Chelsea with managers and when you are a young
player you need to get the trust of the manager for him to play you, so it
was hard.
'Playing week in, week out for Boro has really helped me. The Championship
is a tough division and it has helped me grow up and become a better
player.'
That upturn in fortunes will not only be a relief to Chelsea but the
England setup as well.
McEachran has played through the age groups and was part of the Under-17
team that lifted the European Championship in 2010. Jack Butland, Connor
Wickham and Nathaniel Chalobah were others in that triumphant side to also
progress to Stuart Pearce's Under-21 side.
The Young Lions boss will soon name his 23-man squad for this summer's
European Championships in Israel and McEachran is hoping not to taste the
same disappointment as two years ago.
'I just missed out on that squad for Denmark,' he said. 'It was
disappointing because I had been playing but missed the final cut. I was
in the 17s, though, when we won so I've got experience of the finals. I am
hoping I won't be disappointed again and that we can go on and win this
one.
'Winning with the 17s was a great experience because we were the first
England team to win a tournament for years. All the players who were in
that squad will help us this time because we know that feeling of winning.
Everybody wants to win and I think we have a great chance.'

Jack Cork admits he understands Chelsea's reluctance to develop young talent
Last Updated: March 29, 2013 2:41pm
Jack Cork relishes the experience he gained with former club Chelsea and
reveals he understands their reluctance to develop young talent.
The 23-year-old, who joined the Blues aged nine, joined six different
clubs on loan before permanently leaving west London for Southampton two
years ago.
And while Cork will line up against his former club on Saturday for the
Premier League tie at St Mary's, the Saints midfielder has reacted to
comments that Blues' former chief scout and director of youth development,
Frank Arnesen, has accused the west Londoners of failing to give
youngsters a chance.
"We had quite a good team, especially when Frank was there and Brendan
Rodgers was doing the youth and reserve teams," Saints midfielder Cork
said.
"We had a good set of young players that have all gone onto play quite a
high standard now so it would have been interesting to see where they
would be if they had been given a chance.
"But at the same time, that was a time when Chelsea were doing really well
in every competition they were involved in so I can understand why nobody
was really given a chance."
Middlesbrough midfielder Josh McEachran admitted earlier this week that
his career had stalled after leaving Stamford Bridge, before his
season-long loan to the Championship side.
"You could say Josh is in the same position I was in and is playing his
games," Cork said. "It is frustrating when you're at a club like that and
hope to play for them and you sort of wish you would be there.
"In reality, it is always going to be hard with the managers coming in and
changing. There is always a lot of pressure on them so it is always going
to be hard to blood in the youngsters.
"I can understand what Josh is saying, but you get some great experiences
being around some of the best players in the world."
