Chelsea star Nathan Chalobah reckons he has gone from Ronaldinho wannabe
to a better player, thanks to his Watford loan spell.
The England Under-21 midfielder has put his Championship Play-off FInal
heartbreak aside to compete for Queen and country here at Euro 2013,
bolstered by a 38-game season under Chelsea icon Gianfranco Zola.
The prodigy, who was on the west Londoners' first-team bench at the age of
15, and played for England age-group sides three years early, could win a
place in Pearce's starting XI for the vital group game against Norway on
Saturday.
He admitted: "Zola has helped me with a lot of things this season, we
could be here all day.
When I went there at first I thought I was Ronaldinho and could do
anything I wanted. He managed to get my head around it and just get me
focused on my task as a midfielder and what I should be doing on the
pitch. I think that is what I have improved on this year.
"It is not a nice thing to lose at Wembley against Palace but you get your
head back on it and move on. That is exactly what I am doing now with the
Under-21s."
Chalobah came on as a sub in the disappointing defeat to Italy that began
England's campaign here, and said: "The manager told us that we didn't
pass the ball well enough and that is something we obviously need to
improve going into the next game. If you want to win games at tournaments,
your ball retention has to be up there."
Asked about his Chelsea future, the winner of Youth Player of the Year
award at this year's FA England Awards, said: "The loan spell was
obviously a good experience. You get a buzz when you come out because
there are 20,000 people there watching the game. The fans are clapping and
singing your name or what-not.
"There is no better feeling than that really and I think that's the
difference between going from reserve football to playing real men's
football.
"From now, half of it is down to me, half of it is down to the club. I
just really have to prove myself as a player and do the best I can to try
and get myself into the Chelsea team."
