It is the 15th time Chelsea have ended a campaign in the top three. In this season's Barclays Premier League, the Blues managed the third best home record, the fifth best away from home, the third highest goals total (71) and the fewest conceded (27). Our proud records of the most Premier League points (95 in 2004/05) and goals (103 in 2009/10) remain intact. The leadership of the table changed 25 times over the course of the season, with Jose Mourinho's side occupying top spot the second longest, 64 days, five more than Liverpool. Arsenal led for 128 days before slipping to fourth. Despite accruing the fewest days at the summit, eventual champions Manchester City had games in hand for many weeks that, with a full points haul, would have placed them there. The Blues stood alone in beating a top-four side home and away - a feat achieved twice, against Manchester City and Liverpool. In total we took 16 points from the top four - the next best in that endeavour were relegation-threatened Aston Villa. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/fc/d9/0,,10268~12573180,00.jpg
Gary Cahill celebrates our win at Man City The standout league performances came at the Etihad and Anfield, and in the historic 6-0 floor-wiping of the Gunners at the Bridge. City had a 100 per cent home record before the Blues' 1-0 tactical masterclass there, emulated a few months later on a very confident Merseyside. Chelsea did the Double over five other sides: Cardiff, Fulham, Hull, Southampton and Swansea. A further five sides took just a single point from our encounters: Man United, Norwich, and, of course, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham. The 3-1 victory over Manchester United was the 100th in the Premier League for Mourinho, making him just the fourth to achieve this at the same club. He has beaten every side he has faced in the top flight at least once and has notched more points against Liverpool - nine - than any other club. The top two both netted over 30 goals more than Chelsea's 71 (which was our goal difference in 2010) and it was in the tightest contests where the Blues needed to be more efficient in front of goal. Until January, when Fernando Torres struck at Southampton, none of the centre-forwards was able to hit the target away from home; Demba Ba eventually weighed in twice, in April. Adopting a deeper role in his 13th season at the Bridge, Frank Lampard, so often a game-changer, naturally slipped below double figures for the first time since 2002/03. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/d8/b7/0,,10268~12629976,00.jpg
Lampard Chelsea Defensively Mourinho's men were truly exceptional, the best by a margin: the next tightest rearguard, Man City's, conceded 10 more than the 27 of Cech, Terry and co. No side preserved as many clean sheets or lost fewer league games than Chelsea. The six sides who beat the Blues were Everton, Newcastle, Stoke, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Sunderland. Every one of those narrow but damaging defeats came on a Saturday immediately before a midweek game in the Champions League. The Blues were undefeated in all 12 Sunday matches this season, winning 11 of them and conceding just six goals. Our last four domestic defeats on a Sunday were against the Manchester clubs - three City, one United - most recently April 2013. Nonetheless Europe again produced some of the season's most memorable moments. The thrilling 2-0 comeback from a 1-3 first-leg deficit against PSG amid a deafening atmosphere at the Bridge was the highlight, but the emotional return of Munich 2012 hero Didier Drogba to his spiritual home, as a Galatasaray player, ran that a close second. 'I was proud, so proud,' the Ivorian commented afterwards. 'I spent eight years of my life there - and they have been the best of my football career. Chelsea is my club, it's my team. It was great to see the fans again. They're still here [in my heart].' Less welcome was Eden Hazard's status as the most fouled player in European football last season. He was abused 34 times, nine of those misdemeanours coming against our semi-final vanquishers, Atletico Madrid. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/ec/58/0,,10268~12802284,00.jpg
Hazard Chelsea Chelsea's lonely persistence in reaching the latter stages in Europe has not, as is often suggested, been solely responsible for England retaining four Champions League places - that threat has been some way off. However we have almost single-handedly kept our national association above that of Germany in UEFA rankings. When the next draw is made Chelsea will be seeded fourth, a slip of one place compared to last year as a result of Real Madrid's success. Others English sides are losing more ground. Arsenal dropped out of the first eight and only qualify for top seeding in 2014/15 because of sixth-ranked Manchester United's failure to qualify for Europe. Man City (22nd in UEFA rankings) and Liverpool (32nd) could well land themselves tough groups from which to emerge. As a result of their absence from Europe in 2014/15, United's club coefficient will drop considerably next year, when their 2009/10 tally of 28.5856 points also drops out of the equation. They could well find themselves out of the top seedings. On the subject of looking forward, the top flight has lost one west London rival, Fulham, but may possibly gain another, Queen's Park Rangers, this weekend. We had lost only once to our SW6 neighbours in the Premier League era, so in pragmatic terms they will be missed almost as much as Cardiff City, against whom we have a 100 per cent record (two wins in two games). Norwich were slightly chirpier, the Canaries winning four of our 14 encounters since 1992/93. Newly promoted champions Leicester have suffered nine defeats, managed four draws and won three times against Chelsea. Burnley's record against the Blues is identical to that of Cardiff. In statistical terms (as well as local rivalry) the Stamford Bridge faithful should be hoping for a Derby play-off win: the Rams have come away pointless from 10 of our 14 Premier League meetings, twice as many times as the Rs have from 12. It would also enhance our title chances to see off the likes of Stoke and Sunderland, both of whose winning goals were scored by Liverpool loanees: Oussama Assaidi and former Chelsea pro Fabio Borini. From his temporary base at Everton, on-loan striker Romelu Lukaku scored five of his goals against our title rivals, including a brace in the Toffees' 3-3 draw with Liverpool. Fellow centre-forward Patrick Bamford, 20, turbocharged Derby County's promotion campaign after his loan in late January while Thorgan Hazard, Eden's younger brother, won Belgium's equivalent of the Football Writers' and PFA Player of the Year awards during his spell at Zulte Waregem. Chelsea's Academy production line continues to excel. Chelsea's Under-18s edged two pulsating games against Fulham 7-6 on aggregate to lift the FA Youth Cup for the third time in five years. That is one-club domination not seen since the Busby Babes won the first five Youth Cups in the mid-1950s, and permits hopes of a 'golden generation.' Not to be outdone, the Under-21s were undisputed champions at their level after topping the league then beating the Manchester clubs City and United on their respective home patch in the play-off semi-final and final. Youngsters Isak Ssewankambo, Ola Aina, Andreas Christensen, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kasey Palmer, Charly Musonda and Charlie Colkett were involved in both denouements. Jose Mourinho handed first team debuts to three Academy graduates in 2014/15: Tomas Kalas (pictured below), John Swift (connected with the club from the age of 14) and the club's Young Player of the Year, Lewis Baker, a Blue from the age of nine. That is the most blooded since 2010/11, when Jacob Mellis, Josh McEachran and Ryan Bertrand featured. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/39/3b/0,,10268~12794681,00.jpg
