chalobah--versatility-pays-.html

Nathanial Chalobah has featured in all three of our pre-season fixtures so
far, most recently coming on in central midfield, the position he was
predominantly deployed in when on loan at Middlesbrough earlier this year.
The 19-year-old had played in central defence for the first 45 minutes of
our win at Wycombe and the second 45 minutes of the turnaround at
Wimbledon, but on Wednesday night, against WAC, he was sent on in midfield
in place of Nemanja Matic. Within minutes of his introduction, we had
levelled the score.
It is something Chalobah has grown accustomed to during his time with
Chelsea's younger sides, occasionally playing the two positions over the
course of the same game. He is pleased this variety can give the manager
greater options during a match.
'I'm open to both positions,' he says. 'It depends on what the manager
says. It's good that I have that sort of versatility under my belt. I
can't complain about it.
'Whatever the game situation is, whether it be to kill time or something
like that, then if the manager is able to call on me then that is good.
For me it's all about trying to improve my game and trying to learn every
single day.
'There are some world class players at the club already and some more have
joined recently. You look at them every day and you just try and pick
little bits and pieces that you see them do and then try and see if you
can add it to your game. It's always good for a young player to have such
players around you.'
Chalobah has returned for pre-season training after a second year spent on
loan in the Championship. He started the 2013/14 campaign at Nottingham
Forest before moving to Middlesbrough in the new year, working under Aitor
Karanka, a former colleague of Jose Mourinho's.
'It was really good at Boro. Last year was a massive learning period for
me and I had to be strong mentally. I finished the season quite well at
Boro so it was nice to end on a positive. I learned a lot of things last
season.'
That included the benefits that come with playing alongside Kenneth
Omeruo, another Chelsea man who spent the second half of last season on
loan in Teesside.
'Kenneth is a really good friend of mine. He's one of the most down to
earth people I know. On the pitch he's an animal though! He's so
competitive and he's a good person to be around and have on your team.
'He was at centre-half most of the time and I played in front of him in
midfield. He is very solid. To have someone like him behind you – and
when you have a good relationship off the pitch with him as well – makes
your life easier.
'He had been looking forward to going to Brazil for the World Cup and
representing his country. I spoke to him before each game and to see him
playing at the World Cup really put a smile on my face.'
