zouma-loving-life-with-his-new-family.html
Sun, 27 Jul 2014
It is now over two weeks since Kurt Zouma met his new team-mates and
began pre-season training. Ahead of our match with Olimpija Ljubljana this
afternoon he has been talking about settling into life as a Chelsea
player, on and off the pitch.
The defender signed for the Blues in January but stayed at his former club
St. Etienne on loan until the end of the 2013/14 season. He then reported
for pre-season training at Cobham two-and-a-half weeks ago and as he tells
the official Chelsea website, the time since could scarcely have gone any
better.
'I am very happy here,' he smiles. 'I have been made to feel very welcome
by everyone.
'It's a new experience for me at Chelsea, working with a very good team
and very good staff. Training is very technical, and sometimes it's very
physical, too. That is really good for my progression as a player because
I want to work hard and I need to learn off the great players we have here
at Chelsea.
'John Terry, for example. He is such a good player. He is a leader. I am
learning from him and all the other defenders here all the time in
training and in matches. I am really enjoying working with them.'
A week of our European training camp is now complete and in this time the
19-year-old Zouma has also come to appreciate the vast global appeal of
Chelsea Football Club.
'It is very nice to be here in Europe and to see all the people that
support Chelsea. It makes you realise what a big club it is.
'Also, though, I have seen that Chelsea is like a family. Everybody is
kind and friendly and that makes starting somewhere new much easier. I'm
pleased to see this family atmosphere.'
Having been based in Austria this week the second match of our tour is in
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, an hour-and-a-half to the south.
Chelsea supporters that have followed our three pre-season fixtures to
date will have noticed that Zouma has already operated at both right-back
and centre-back, something he is comfortable with.
'Playing in these two positions has already helped my adaptation here,' he
says, considering what difference playing across the right side of our
defence has made.
'As I said there are many good defenders here and so I am learning how to
play with them, whether it is on the right or in the middle. I am building
an understanding with them.
'Today's game will again be a game for the whole squad to play, and to
keep developing our understanding. I think it will be a good game and I
hope we can win it.'

"We believe the same thing."
"Maybe there is hope."
