Baker: Great experience
Sat, 2 Aug 2014
With our European training camp drawing to a close, Lewis Baker has been
reflecting on his maiden trip away with the first-team squad.
Baker, 19, was one of the younger players selected by Jose Mourinho to
take part in the camp, which has seen the Blues pass through Austria,
Slovenia and the Netherlands, before moving on to Germany to take on
Werder Bremen tomorrow.
Baker, who made his first-team debut in last season's FA Cup win at Derby
County, has played a part in all five of our pre-season friendlies to
date, and is delighted to have been involved.
'This is my first tour with the senior squad and it's been a great
experience for me,' he tells the official Chelsea website. 'I'm training
with some of the best players in the world and that can only help me
improve.
'You definitely notice the difference (from training with the Under-21s),
particularly off the ball. Everything is so compact and with the way the
players defend it's really hard to get through and create openings.
'You don't have much time on the ball because of the way they press you,
as soon as you try to turn you're always going to have somebody in your
face. It's just a quicker tempo but it's good for everyone, especially the
younger players.'
The recent addition of Cesc Fabregas will undoubtedly strengthen the squad
for the coming season and, like the Spaniard, Baker's versatility in the
midfield area is one of his biggest attributes.
'He's on a different level,' says last season's Chelsea Young Player of
the Year. 'He's been talking to me on the pitch and giving me help so it's
great for me to be able to take advice from him.
'Playing alongside someone like Cesc Fabregas is a massive deal for me,
especially as we play in the same position. He can play high, he can play
deeper and also out wide. Even when I'm just watching from the sidelines
I always try to pick up tips from his game.'
Baker has been joined on the trip by a number of familiar faces from the
club's Academy, with the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah, Nathan Ake and
Andreas Christensen all part of the group.
'At the start a few people were a bit nervous, wondering how they were
going to fit in, especially the ones who haven't been involved with the
first team before,' he explains.
'Everyone makes you feel so welcome, though, and the whole squad are
getting on really well together.'
Whether or not the youngster starts tomorrow's game against Werder Bremen
is yet to be decided, but there is no doubt his first trip away with the
senior squad is one Baker will remember for a long time.
'The sessions are always enjoyable, Jose Mourinho is a great manager to
learn from,' he says. 'He always demands a lot but that's because he
believes in his players and knows we can do what he wants.
'I'm doing okay at the moment but it's important for me to keep listening
and learning every day if I want to improve.'
