Under-21s report: Chelsea 0 Leicester City 1
Fri, 6 Mar 2015
Our Under-21s suffered league defeat when an early Leicester goal could
not be overturned on a cold evening at Cobham.
The Foxes struck after just three minutes through Harry Panayioyou and
saves from Chelsea goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney kept the deficit down during
an impressive opening spell from the visitors.
It was an improved second period for the Blues but they did not carve out
clear-cut opportunities as they drew a blank for the second time in a
week.
== Team news ==
With the Academy having contested an FA Youth Cup semi-final the previous
evening, Under-21s manager Adi Viveash made eight changes from the side
that started in Monday's defeat at Liverpool. The trio to keep their
places were defenders Fankaty Dabo and Andreas Christensen, as well as
captain Jordan Houghton.
Kevin Wright and Dion Conroy joined Dabo and Christensen in a back four
that protected Mitchell Beeney in goal, while Houghton was joined in
midfield by first team squad members Nathan Ake and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Reece Mitchell was chosen to lead the line up front, supported from out
wide by Alex Kiwomya and Jeremie Boga.
Leicester came into the game with just one defeat in seven league outings
and they made three changes from a 2-2 draw against Norwich City at the
start of last month. Tom Lawrence and Anthony Knockaert, both with first
team appearances to their name this campaign, started.
== First half ==
The young Foxes sprang out of the traps and scored the opener with their
first attack inside three minutes. Striker Panayiotou chased after a long
ball down the left channel and stole the ball from Conroy as the defender
attempted to shield it behind for a goal-kick. After cutting inside, the
Leicester man beat Beeney with a confident low drive.
Chelsea looked to respond quickly and Loftus-Cheek headed Kiwomya's cross
over but the visitors' high, intense pressure was a key feature of the
opening half hour. Disrupting the home side's build-up play from the back,
Steve Beaglehole's team then looked to do damage when they retrieved the
ball and were unfortunate not to double their advantage.
Joe Dodoo's deflected free-kick clipped the base of the far post and then
Beeney denied both Panayiouou with an excellent close-range stop with his
feet and Anthony Knockaert from an acute angle on the right.
Kiwomya tested Adam Smith in the Leicester goal and Mitchell got on the
end of a driven cross from Wright but headed over as Viveash's side grew
into the half, however their revival fell short of levelling the scores
before the interval.
== Second half ==
Beeney pushed Lawrence's free-kick around the post moments after the
restart but it was the Blues with a great opportunity to strike early in
the second period. Ake's free-kick nicked off the wall and fell kindly
into Kiwomya's path, however the forward's shot from close-range was
straight at Smith and pushed away to safety by the keeper.
Viveash introduced Kasey Palmer and then schoolboy striker Ike Ugbo in an
attempt to find an attacking spark but despite increased control in the
game, clear chances remained limited. Ake twice brought routine saves from
Smith, the first with a drive from 30 yards and then with a low free-kick,
yet Leicester continued to defend doggedly.
Ake's tenacity lifted his teammates in the final 10 minutes as they won
individual battles all over the field and both Mitchell and Palmer worked
the goalkeeper late on but the Blues could not find the elusive equaliser.
== Manager reaction ==
Adi Viveash reflected after the game on a difficult evening for his side
and a slow start to the game which cost them.
'I thought it was a game of two halves but we started poorly and conceded
a really poor goal,' he said.
'We made some basic errors and didn't look like we had the confidence to
play out from the back when we could. We grew stronger and created quite a
few chances but didn't really work their goalkeeper and a team with their
experience dug in and held on well.
'It's positive for Jeremie Boga to play an hour after his involvement last
night and Kevin Wright has played 90 minutes in a really high-level game
up against a first-team player in Knockaert. Ake and Loftus-Cheek were
very good for us, especially considering they haven't played a game for a
long time, but it's a disappointing evening for us.
'All we can do now is work harder. We have to come back into work tomorrow
and start preparing for a European quarter-final next week, which is a
really big game for us now.'
Next up for the Academy is that UEFA Youth League quarter-final against
Atletico Madrid on Tuesday 10 March. Kick-off is at 3pm at Cobham, however
we regret supporters will not be admitted entrance.
