http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2014/12/ under-21-report--chelsea-5-norwich-0.html Under-21 report: Chelsea 5 Norwich 0 Tue, 23 Dec 2014 Our Under-21 side ended the year on a very positive note as they beat Norwich with a five-star display this afternoon (Tuesday) in the Premier League International Cup. Alex Kiwomya's brilliant volley gave the hosts the lead midway through the opening half but it was a second-half full of quality that gave the scoreline a festive gloss. Norwich defender Adel Gafaiti sliced Kiwomya's cross into his own net minutes after the restart before Boga curled in a fine free-kick to settle the contest. Dominic Solanke added a brace late on to ensure the Academy ended the year in style. == Team news == There were nine starters between both sides who played a part in the FA Youth Cup final between the two teams in 2012/13, with Chelsea representatives Mitchell Beeney, Charlie Colkett, Alex Kiwomya, John Swift and Jeremie Boga. The Canaries had four involved including two goalscorers from when they won the trophy 18 months previously; former Chelsea Academy defender Cameron McGeehan and forward Josh Murphy. Beeney was protected by a back four of Fankaty Dabo, captain Jordan Houghton and first-year scholars Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva. Colkett, Swift and Boga formed the midfield trio while Dominic Solanke led the line up front supported from out wide by Kiwomya and Kasey Palmer. == First half == It was a lively and feisty opening on a mild December afternoon at AFC Wimbledon as both sides looked to gain an early foothold in the game. Josh Murphy had the first sight of goal after a few minutes but his free-kick effort was straight at Beeney, before Palmer's powerful but rising drive from 25 yards flew narrowly over Declan Rudd's bar. A deep free-kick from Palmer from the left caused problems as Houghton met it at the back post and headed across goal, however the young Canaries just about dealt with the danger and cleared to safety. They were unable to prevent Chelsea taking the lead midway through the half as Dasilva advanced down the left flank and delivered a brilliant cross towards Kiwomya. The forward watched the flight of the ball expertly and displayed perfect technique with the volley and smashed it beyond a helpless goalkeeper. Palmer was involved in much of our best play and the goal buoyed Viveash's side into their best spell of the half. Palmer's low drive towards the far post fizzed just wide before the midfielder won a dangerous free-kick 20 yards out. Swift stepped up and flighted it towards the top corner with Rudd beaten, though a slight deflection off the wall was enough to save the visitors. Norwich remained a threat and were looking to get in behind as they broke quickly, though Houghton and Clarke-Salter were aware of the danger and dealt with it well. Murphy attempted an audacious lob that looped just over the bar with one such attack. == Second half == It was a bright restart and Palmer almost doubled the advantage after 30 seconds with a wonderful individual run forward, though his low effort across goal trickled agonisingly wide. A minute later the two-goal cushion was secured, though it arrived in slightly fortuitous circumstances as Kiwomya's cross from the right was hooked into his own net by Adel Gafaiti. Murphy continued to carry Norwich's greatest attacking threat and brought a good stop from Beeney after 54 minutes, but it was the home side in the ascendancy and a third goal was added 10 minutes later. Boga had threatened moments before with a dead-ball shot, bent just beyond the far post, however he made no mistake moments later. A typical mazy run came to an abrupt end as Reece Hall-Johnson brought the Frenchman down on the edge of the box. Boga picked himself up and curled a beautiful free-kick into the top corner beyond the despairing dive of Rudd. Dabo then went close after a quick break forward and some excellent play from Kiwomya and Boga, before Solanke got his first goal in the 74th minute, capping another flowing move that started with Houghton's super cross-field pass out to Kiwomya on the right flank. The forward delivered an inviting low cross for the striker and he provided the close-range finish. There was still time for a fifth goal to be notched in the final minute of normal time. Solanke, hard-working and industrious as ever, chased a long ball forward and capitalised on a mistake by substitute Michee Efete to notch his 14th goal of the campaign. The Under-21s move to top of Group A in this International Cup competition, with a final group game against FC Porto to come in January. The Academy now breaks for the festive season, with the Under-21s next in action on 5 January away at Liverpool. == Manager reaction == Adi Viveash reflected after the game on an excellent display and praised his young team's efforts as they went top of their group in the competition. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a fantastic performance with quite a young team so we're very proud. There's obviously a bit of history between the clubs at this level and quite a few of us in that dressing room went through a really difficult experience against them at Bridge a couple of years ago. 'We competed well, scored some great goals and in the second half it was a ruthless performance but we defended really well as a team too. We had four Under-17s on the pitch at the end who are part of Joe Edwards' youth group and have been doing really well and they showed me that they want to become part of this group. 'It was an outstanding performance from Kasey Palmer, the best we've seen from him. It was also nice to see Alex Kiwomya score one and make one with a great cross. He's had a bitty start to the season but he's someone with a wonderful attitude and a player I really enjoy coaching as he wants to get better. 'On top of that, Dominic's movement was of the highest level and we're pleased to end the year with a result and performance like that. You don't achieve anything for being top of the league at Christmas or for being top in certain groups but we have a lot to look forward to now in 2015.'
