Dominic Solanke had fired the young Blues into a lead inside two minutes before an instant response from the hosts as Brandon Barker's fierce drive flew in at the near post. Manchester City turned the game around and took the lead midway through the opening half as Thierry Ambrose finished off a neat move with a tidy finish, although Solanke's second of the night in the 69th minute looked like it had secured a point for the Blues. However, Patrick Vieira's side weathered our best spell of the game in the final 20 minutes before grabbing all three points in added time through substitute Bersant Celina. == Team news == There were two changes from the side that started the Under-21s' last league outing in mid-December, with Nathan Ake and Izzy Brown returning to action. Ake joined Ruben Loftus-Cheek and captain Jordan Houghton in midfield, while Brown joined Charly Musonda in providing the wide attacking support for striker Solanke. The back five were unchanged with Mitchell Beeney in goal protected by a quartet of Fankaty Dabo, Ola Aina, Andreas Christensen and Jay Dasilva. Four of the starting 11 have featured for Jose Mourinho's first team this season. == First half == Under-21s manager Adi Viveash spoke before the game about how the first match back after the Christmas break can often be an open affair and it exploded into life instantly, with goals traded inside the opening five minutes. Chelsea took the lead after two minutes as Kean Bryan lost control of the ball on the edge of his penalty area and Solanke pounced, instantly firing into the net for his 16th goal of the season as the goalkeeper desperately tried to scramble back into position. The advantage was quickly snuffed out by Vieira's side. Barker advanced dangerously and drove into the box before unleashing a fierce drive that flew past Beeney at his near post to level the scores. The game settled for the next 20 minutes with midfield taking centre stage, although chances continued to come at both ends. Beeney had to be quick off his line to deny Ambrose as the forward found himself in plenty of space in the box, while Musonda had an opportunity to test Angus Gunn in the home goal from a 25-yard free-kick but arrowed his attempt just over. The third goal of the game did arrive shortly after, the result of bright approach play from City. Jose Pozo latched on to the ball following a weak clearance and he threaded an excellent ball through to find Ambrose's run in the inside-right channel. The wideman was not to be denied again, holding off the challenge of Dasilva before firing into the far corner. City attempted to slow the tempo of the game and take control once they had the lead, though this was a half in which clear-cut chances continued to be created at both ends, albeit with Beeney the busier of the two goalkeepers. The visiting stopper first denied Ambrose's close-range shot by tipping the drive over the bar before then diving low to his right to push away Barker's curling effort. Olivier Ntcham headed inches over from the follow-up play, while Loftus-Cheek's powerful drive threatened for the league leaders before the interval. == Second half == Viveash made two changes at the break as centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter and Jeremie Boga were introduced, with the Frenchman joining the attacking quartet in the number 10 role. It was a quieter opening to the second period than in the first half, though Chelsea settled over the first quarter of an hour and then grew more threatening. A key three-minute spell came midway through the half as Beeney made an excellent stop to keep his side in the game and then Solanke levelled, receiving Brown's pass before his deflected shot looped over the helpless Gunn. That set the scene for a tense finale as both sides felt they could snatch all three points, with the Blues enjoying their best spell of the game. Aina skewed a shot harmlessly wide at the back post after Dasilva's deep cross and then Loftus-Cheek shot wide before the stoppage-time winning goal. It came for the home side and was netted by substitute Celina, who found space in the box to drive a low effort beyond Beeney. Next up for the Under-21s is the visit of FC Porto in the Premier League International Cup next Wednesday 14 January. Before that our youth team continue in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday 13 January as they host Huddersfield Town in a fourth-round tie at Aldershot.
