Porto had taken the lead after 15 minutes through striker Andre Silva before Kasey Palmer equalised with a brilliant strike from 35 yards. Both sides had opportunities to seal victory after the break but the hosts won it through a stoppage-time strike from Kyle Scott. == Team news == With the Under-18s in FA Youth Cup action the previous evening, there were a mixture of senior Under-21s and younger players involved for Adi Viveash's side. Nathan Ake, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek comprised the midfield trio, with schoolboy Ike Ugbo leading the line up front supported from out wide by Reece Mitchell and Palmer. Jordan Houghton captained the side from central defence alongside Dion Conroy, while Under-16 defender Trevoh Chalobah, the younger brother of Nathaniel, and Fankaty Dabo protected Jamal Blackman in goal. It was the first action for the goalkeeper since his recent return from a loan spell at Middlesbrough. == First half == Loftus-Cheek tested Aldo Nonteiro in the Porto goal inside the opening few minutes with a drive that was comfortably gathered while Palmer came closer after 12 minutes, receiving a pass on the edge of the box and spinning cleverly before firing in a low shot that trickled inches wide of the far post. The deadlock was broken after a quarter of an hour and it was the Portuguese side celebrating. A hanging cross from the right was palmed away by Blackman but only as far as striker Silva, who poked his finish into the net beyond the last-ditch attempts of a clearance from Houghton. The young Blues responded brightly and swiftly, levelling the scores after five minutes. Palmer, who scored a brilliant goal at the same ground the night before in the Youth Cup, managed to better that effort with a rasping, rising drive from distance that flew beyond Nonteiro and into the far top corner. Buoyed by his latest moment of magic, Palmer was involved in much of Chelsea's best play through the remainder of the half. His free-kick floated narrowly over the bar before another drive from distance was saved down low by the goalkeeper as an even half headed into the interval. == Second half == The second period began in difficult conditions as the driving rain continued and the wind began to affect much of the play. Palmer saw another free-kick attempt miss the target by a few inches but, as in the first half, clear chances remained limited. Viveash introduced Scott and Polish youth international Hubert Adamczyk midway through the half, the latter making his first appearance for the club, and they combined after 70 minutes to threaten. Adamczyk advanced on the break and teed up Scott with a clever back-heel, though the midfielder's shot was straight at Nonteiro. Porto had fashioned a good opportunity moments before that as a free-kick from the left was swung in dangerously and centre-back Igor Osorio made contact from six yards out, however his touch was too heavy and the effort headed harmlessly over the crossbar. Adamczyk had another chance to test the visiting goalkeeper moments later from a clever free-kick routine but Nonteiro was equal to his strike before Ruben Sammut's effort forced a corner in stoppage time. Porto failed to clear the danger and Scott curled an effort beyond the keeper to seal all three points. Silva had a great chance to level the scores again with the last kick of the game but he missed the target when in a great position eight yards out. == Manager reaction == Manager Adi Viveash reflected afterwards on progression to the knockout rounds of the competition. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'We're very proud of that win against a top team. 'The dynamic of our team was quite diverse, from two schoolboys to Jamal in goal but we handled that really well. We put a game-plan together to press high and that worked well for 60 minutes until we tired a bit, but we contained the game well in the final stages and got a great winner. 'I was pleased for Kyle to score that because he came off the bench again like last night and was really involved. He's shown a great attitude this week to come on in both games and have an impact. Palmer has started to consistently put a good run of form together and he scored two goal-of-the-season contenders on consecutive nights here. 'It's great for us to get that first win of 2015 and we're into the last eight now so we want to go on and win it. That's the challenge; for the Under-21s to go and win a trophy at European level.' Next up for the Academy is a league trip to West Brom for the Under-18s next Monday, 19 January.
