http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/01/ under-21s-report--west-ham-united-1-chelsea-3.html Under-21s report: West Ham United 1 Chelsea 3 Fri, 23 Jan 2015 Our Under-21s went top of the Under-21 Premier League this evening (Friday) after victory at West Ham. Kasey Palmer had given the visitors a fifth-minute with an excellent flicked finish before a brace from Dominic Solanke in the final minutes of the first half sent the young Blues in three goals up at the break. The Hammers reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart through Sebastian Lletget but Adi Viveash's side contained their hosts well throughout the second half and secured a valuable three points on their travels. == Team news == There were four changes from the side that started the Under-21s' last league outing at Manchester City, with Charlie Colkett, Jake Clarke-Salter, Dion Conroy and Kasey Palmer all coming into the team. Clarke-Salter and Conroy formed the central defensive partnership, protecting Mitchell Beeney in goal and supported by full-backs Jay Dasilva and Ola Aina. Colkett came into the midfield alongside Jordan Houghton, with Charly Musonda operating in the no.10 role behind central striker Solanke. Izzy Brown and Palmer provided the attacking threat from out wide. == First half == Chelsea started brightly on a cold night in east London and Clarke-Salter came close to turning in Colkett's inswinging free-kick at the back post but couldn't quite stretch enough to make contact. Solanke brought an early save from Raphael Spiegel in the West Ham goal before the home goalkeeper was beaten after five minutes. A short right-sided corner earned space for Musonda and his floated ball into the box was turned in by an instinctive flick from Palmer. It was the midfielder's third goal in three games since the turn of the year and he went close to extending the lead moments later. His dangerous low drive towards the far corner was pushed away well by Spiegel. The Blues were enjoying a strong opening spell, with Musonda's free-kick also working the goalkeeper; however the hosts weathered the early pressure and soon grew into the game. They fashioned a great chance to level as Djair Parfitt-Williams advanced down the left and flashed a centre across the face of goal. Captain Josh Cullen met the cross with a flying header but it bounced just wide of the far post. Chelsea continued to create good opportunities when attacking and Brown's header brought a good reflex save from Spiegel after Dasilva's cross from the left. Houghton and Clarke-Salter were called into strong defensive work one-on-one but, with the game heading towards the interval, the visitors ended the half ruthlessly as they grabbed two further goals in the final minutes through Solanke. The first came at the end of an incisive move as the striker turned the loose ball in from close range as Brown's deflected effort bounced across goal, while the second rounded off a moment of quality. Colkett's through ball was measured perfectly and the striker remained composed to slot the ball into the bottom corner for his 22nd goal of the campaign. == Second half == Colkett's vision and passing continued to cause problems for West Ham at the start of the second period as he teed up Musonda and then Aina to try and trouble Spiegel, although it was West Ham celebrating next as they reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart. Parfitt-Williams made progress down the left flank and delivered dangerously towards the near post from the byline for Sebastian Lletget, who diverted the ball past Beeney from a few yards out. The young Blues attempted to control the game through possession for a period after conceding, keeping their shape well with and without the ball. Clarke-Salter fizzed a low drive across the face of goal that Solanke came close to steering in at the far post but opportunities were limited through much of the half. Jordan Brown flashed a shot harmlessly wide in the closing exchanges, while Chelsea substitute Jeremie Boga provided an additional spark in attack with his quality on the ball, however neither goalkeeper was tested late on as a quiet half came to its conclusion and the visitors secured a second away league win of the season == Manager reaction == Speaking after the game, Adi Viveash praised his side's effort in securing the win after an impressive first-half display. 'The first half was an excellent performance,' he said. 'We had five days preparation coming into the game with all the players who started tonight and that is key. 'I was pleased with the work-rate of Solanke, Brown and Palmer, our front players. They were superb in the first half and it was a workmanlike performance from us, especially in the second half, which is what you need to win away from home. 'Our goals were really good too; the build-up to the second goal was unbelievable play and our third pleased me because of our shape off the ball, with Colkett in the perfect block position. 'It's an important win because we needed that one away from home and it sets us up now for two really top Under-21 games against Southampton at the Bridge and then away at Man United.'
