The young Blues stormed into a 5-0 lead after 35 minutes as Kasey Palmer, Izzy Brown and Dominic Solanke netted while debutant at this level, Tammy Abraham, bagged a brace. However, Southampton grabbed a goal back through Ryan Seager minutes before the interval and then further reduced the deficit after the restart through substitute Josh Sims and defender Bevis Mugabi. Yet the Blues did enough in the final half hour to keep hold of their two-goal advantage and leapfrog the Saints in the table. == Team news == There were three changes from the side that won 3-1 at West Ham 10 days previously as Fankaty Dabo, Kasey Palmer and Tammy Abraham came into the starting team. Dabo joined an otherwise unchanged back four that comprised Dion Conroy, Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva, with Mitchell Beeney continuing in goal. Palmer started in the no.10 role in midfield supported by captain Jordan Houghton and Charlie Colkett, while Dominic Solanke led the line up front with Abraham and Izzy Brown providing the width in attack. == First half == It was third versus first in the Under-21 Premier League and the young Blues knew victory would take them level on points with leaders Southampton. That incentive prompted a lively start to the game and the visitors hit the woodwork inside three minutes. Jake Sinclair escaped down the left and squirmed a shot underneath Beeney that flicked up onto the top of the crossbar and behind. The Saints were left to rue that early spurned chance as Chelsea took the lead less than two minutes later. Palmer picked up the ball from Colkett and turned into space 25 yards from goal, before drilling a powerful low effort beyond the despairing dive of goalkeeper Will Britt and into the far bottom corner for his fourth goal in four games. It proved the start of a relentless period of high-intensity football and ruthless finishing from the hosts. They peppered Britt's goal with efforts and surged into a 4-0 lead before the half-hour mark. Abraham's header was pushed clear and Conroy nodded over before Brown grabbed the second goal with a low drive that deflected off defender Bevis Mugabi and past a wrong-footed goalkeeper. Jason McCarthy blocked from Palmer and Dominic Gape cleared Clarke-Salter's header off the line, but the young Saints continued to be blown away as Abraham, on his Under-21 debut, netted a quick double. The first came rather fortuitously for the 17-year-old as Palmer's goal-bound volley deflected off him a couple of yards out and flew into the back of the net. His second was a more accomplished finish as he received Palmer's perfectly-weighted assist and beat the onrushing Britt with a clever chipped effort to take his goalscoring tally up to 28 for the season. Ryan Seager had a rare sight at goal for the Saints as he accelerated in behind the Blues defence but Conroy was quick and strong to thwart the danger. Moments later, it was 5-0 as Southampton failed to clear a corner from the left and Houghton's volleyed effort was cleverly flicked in by Solanke. Despite the scoreline, Southampton enjoyed their best spell of the half in the final moments as they reduced the deficit. Seager, the Under-21 league's top goalscorer, curled a good effort into the top corner from 20 yards and then Sinclair came close to adding a second, but flashed his shot inches over. == Second half == Southampton restarted where they had left off before the break and two goals within 12 minutes brought them back into the game. Sinclair's hooked ball over the top of defence gave Jake Hesketh something to chase and he scored. The deficit was further reduced after 57 minutes as the Blues didn't clear their lines after a corner from the right. The ball was turned back into a dangerous area and with Mugabi putting Clarke-Salter under a lot of pressure, the defender diverted it past Beeney to make it 5-3. The Blues had to dig deep to regain control but showed discipline to manage the game throughout the final half hour. Beeney saved comfortably down to his right from Hesketh and then the midfielder flashed an effort inches wide, while down the other end substitute Charly Musonda fired low at Britt and Colkett shot over as the Blues claimed the points to go top of the league. == Manager reaction == Adi Viveash reflected afterwards on a positive night for his side and praised not just a breathtaking attacking display in the first half but the mental strength of his players after the break. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'I thought it was a game worthy of being played at the first team stadium. 'Southampton started better and had two opportunities, one from which Mitchell has made a very good save and that woke us up a little bit. The first 35 minutes was as good attacking play as I've seen in seven years here. We were unplayable but then we went a bit too far at 5-0 and had full-backs bombing forward which we didn't need to do. That's the game management side of things we've been talking about. 'We showed bottle at 5-3 in the second half because we were under a lot of pressure and there was enough time for Southampton to get back in the game, but Colkett and Houghton really came to the fore at that stage of the game. Abraham was fantastic on his first Under-21s start; it was a brilliant finish for his second goal, he held the width really well and to get through 90 minutes is a big thing. 'It's back-to-back wins for the first time for a while and we have to be pleased with a lot of what we did. There's a lot of development aspects for us to take from the game and look at in the week, and then we'll go to Man United next week with a lot of confidence.' Next up for the Academy is a home league game for the Under-18s this Saturday (7 February), while the Under-21s return to action next Monday (9 February) with a trip to Manchester United, a game live on Chelsea TV.
