Under-18s report: Fulham 1 Chelsea 2
Fri, 13 Feb 2015
Our Under-18s came from behind to win and guaranteed they will finish top
of the Under-18 Premier League south section with two games to spare.
Aaron Redford put the hosts in front midway through the opening period but
Ali Suljic's powerful header restored parity within three minutes.
Fulham started the second half brightly but, after surviving the pressure
in the opening quarter of an hour after the restart, the Blues grew
stronger and finished the dominant side as Mukhtar Ali converted from
close range in the 88th minute to hand them all three points.
== Team news ==
Six schoolboys were involved from the start for Joe Edwards' side as Jared
Thompson came into the team in goal and the trio of Richard Nartey, Josh
Grant and Cole Dasilva joined Suljic in defence.
Ruben Sammut captained the side from midfield alongside Ali, with Under-16
midfielder Jacob Maddox operating in the number 10 role. Miro Muheim and
Faiq Bolkiah provided the attacking support for striker Ike Ugbo.
== First half ==
The conditions were difficult at a wet and windy Motspur Park and Fulham
threatened early on as Josh Walker turned Stephen Humphrys' cross towards
goal, although Thompson was able to gather comfortably. Chelsea's first
effort at goal came after 14 minutes as Ali fired wide before Bolkiah
clipped the outside of the far post with a brilliant curling effort that
had goalkeeper Magnus Norman beaten.
Norman also denied Ugbo by racing quickly off his line to snuff out the
danger but the Whites grew into the game steadily as Thompson kept out
efforts from Humphrys and then Dennis Adeniran before being beaten. The
goal arrived in unfortunate circumstances for the Chelsea stopper as a
high ball forward got caught in the wind and he was deceived by its
flight. With Thompson caught out of position as the ball bounced away from
him, striker Aaron Redford found himself with the simple task of turning
the loose ball into an empty net.
However, the home side's lead lasted less than three minutes. A corner
from the left was floated dangerously into the six-yard box and
centre-back Suljic powered a header beyond Norman to net his second goal
in three away games.
== Second half ==
Fulham started the second period brightly as Redford flashed a shot over
and then Harrison Paton's floated dipping free-kick required Thompson to
expertly back-pedal and push over the bar. The Blues continued to carry a
threat of their own though and Ali shot narrowly wide at the end of a
quick break forward.
The introduction of Kyle Scott and Fikayo Tomori after an hour gave the
visitors fresh legs and new ideas. Bolkiah drilled an effort wide after
advancing down the right flank before two good chances were fashioned for
Maddox and Ugbo. The first was again carved out down the right as the ball
was worked infield and Sammut fed the schoolboy, who cut inside onto his
stronger right foot before shooting over.
The second was created by Tomori as he progressed to the byline and picked
out Ugbo, though the striker's cushioned finish towards the far corner
bounced a couple of yards the wrong side of the post. Tomori then fired
over as it seemed the derby would end level, however the league leaders
demonstrated the resilience and quality that has seen them top their
regional section and grabbed a winner with two minutes remaining.
Tomori once again provided the threat from right-back and delivered
another inviting cross into the box that supporting midfielder Ali turned
in beyond Norman. The winner sparked deserved celebrations from those in
blue as their efforts since August were rewarded with a first-place finish.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards reflected afterwards on a performance in which his side
demonstrated character and resilience in difficult playing conditions,
while also managing to impose their playing style on the game. Speaking to
the official Chelsea website, he said: 'Fulham away is always a tough
place to come and the conditions were horrible today, which was always
going to make life difficult.
'We started with a young team and both sides did well in the first half.
Jared Thompson made some good saves for us early on but we looked equally
threatening at times. In the second half, I was really pleased with how we
kept pushing on when they looked like they were fading and obviously the
introduction of Kyle Scott and Fikayo Tomori was key for us in that sense.
'We played some very good football in the last half hour and we showed our
character again; we knew a point would be okay for us today but to keep
going and then win it at the end with two minutes to go was great.
'We now know we've finished top of the south section and it's a nice way
to do it with a lot of schoolboys involved and a real team effort. The
youth league is not really about having a settled team of 11 players every
week, it's very much a group effort and the Under-16s have come in and
summed that up perfectly for us today.'
Next up for the Academy is the FA Youth Cup quarter-final as the Under-18s
travel to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United this Monday 16
February. The game is being screened live on Chelsea TV. Adi Viveash's
Under-21s are next in action on Thursday 19 February as they host Fulham
at Aldershot in the last eight of the Premier League International Cup.
