Under-19s report: Chelsea 3 Maccabi Tel Aviv 0
Wed 16 Sep 2015
Chelsea Under-19s kicked off the defence of the UEFA Youth League title
with a convincing victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv this afternoon
(Wednesday).
Kasey Palmer fired the young Blues ahead after 20 minutes and added a
second two minutes into the second period before Tammy Abraham completed
the goalscoring late on.
Adi Viveash fielded a new-look Under-19 team for the group campaign
opener, having won the title in April with a 3-2 win over Shakhtar
Donetsk. Just three of the side that started that final returned to the
team against Maccabi, with captain Jake Clarke-Salter joining Ola Aina in
defence and Jay Dasilva operating in a more advanced left-wing role.
Fikayo Tomori and Trevoh Chalobah completed a back four protecting Nathan
Baxter in goal, with Mukhtar Ali and Kyle Scott lining up in central
midfield. Palmer started in the number 10 role supporting striker Abraham,
with Dasilva wide-left and Miro Muheim wide-right.
The Blues started well in the rain at Cobham and controlled much of the
opening exchanges as Maccabi centre-back Galili Bar denied Abraham with a
well-timed tackle in the first minute. He then blocked Palmer's effort
before averting the danger with a measured clearance from under his own
crossbar.
Goalkeeper Ohayon Haviv was quick off his line to collect the ball at the
feet of Abraham after a neat turn from the striker, before the hosts'
number nine headed just over as he attempted to connect to Dasilva's
teasing cross from the left.
The early pressure soon paid dividends as the defending champions took the
lead after 20 minutes. Scott advanced from midfield and moved the ball to
the overlapping Aina, whose cross was knocked down by Dasilva to Palmer.
The 18-year-old had been lively early on and was not about to pass up on
the opportunity to add to his hat-trick last time out against Liverpool
for the Under-21s, placing the ball low and beyond the reach of Haviv.
Maccabi responded with a few spells of possession but failed to trouble
Baxter as the Blues defended strongly. Down the other end, Abraham's shot
was blocked well and then the striker's low drive was pushed behind by the
goalkeeper after Scott stole possession high up the pitch.
The visitors fashioned their first genuine opportunity in the final
minutes of the half as Durovic Lazar found Altman Tomer 18 yards from
goal, however the forward sliced his strike off-target and left Baxter
untroubled.
Viveash made a switch at the break as Under-16 Dujon Sterling was
introduced and his impact from right-wing was immediate as his low cross
was turned into the back of the net by Palmer, arriving on cue and sliding
in from close range.
The midfielder was now hunting a hat-trick in back-to-back games. He went
close to completing his personal treble with a powerful drive that was
pushed behind by the goalkeeper and a shot towards the near post that was
held well.
Maccabi threatened once again through Tomer but his radar remained awry as
he fired wide following Shapira Amit's cross. Dasilva brought a good
flying save from Haviv down the other end before the Blues extended their
advantage in the 78th minute. Abraham latched on to Clarke-Salter's raking
pass over the top and rounded the keeper before slotting in from a narrow
angle.
Substitute Jacob Maddox had a strike blocked and was then denied by Haviv
as the visiting goalkeeper remained the busiest man on the field. His
efforts gave the scoreline a respectable look, though Chelsea had been
dominant as we began the new group campaign with all three points.

After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on an excellent start to the group
campaign. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'We
controlled the game for long periods but I felt Maccabi had a good shape
and caused us a couple of problems. They were well-organised but we're
really pleased to start with a clean sheet and our back four were strong.
'Our second goal came at a good time and it was a great team goal with a
lovely ball in from Dujon. Both Kasey's goals were classy finishes and he
could have had five or six today but his confidence is certainly rising
and that's what we want. We need goals from other areas this season and
Kasey can certainly help us with that.
'We haven't got the physicality of last season so we're going to have to
do things a different way and play a bit more expansive football. That
worked well at times today and we'll have to continue out-thinking and
out-footballing teams if we're going to do well in the competition again
this year.
'We know that tougher challenges lie ahead. Our next game at Porto has
become an early big game after they were beaten in Kiev today but we
can't ask for much more than a clean sheet and three good goals to start
the campaign.'
The Under-19s return to action in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday 29
September with a trip to Porto. Before then, our Under-21s host Reading at
Stamford Bridge next Friday (26 September) in the Under-21 Premier League.
Tickets are currently available online priced at £5 for adults and £3
for juniors/seniors.
