Under-18s report: Chelsea 1 Middlesbrough 3
Sat, 4 Apr 2015
Our Under-18s went down to a defeat in their third play-off league game as
Middlesbrough went top of the elite tier.
Junior Mondal's free-kick put the visitors in front in the first half,
before Alex Pattison doubled the lead 20 minutes after the restart.
Mondal added a third before the Blues reduced the deficit from the penalty
spot courtesy of Tammy Abraham. Yet hope of a comeback was short-lived and
Middlesbrough took home maximum points.
== Team news ==
There were three changes from our last outing a fortnight previously as
Isaac Christie-Davies, Ruben Sammut and Ike Ugbo returned to the side.
Sammut skippered from midfield alongside Mukhtar Ali and Kyle Scott, the
latter operating in the number 10 role.
Abraham led the line up front supported from out wide by Christie-Davies
and Ugbo, while Bradley Collins in goal was protected by a back four
consisting of Charlie Wakefield, Ali Suljic, Fikayo Tomori and Josh Grant.
== First half ==
Middlesbrough started brightly at an overcast Cobham, working Collins
inside two minutes as Lee Hetherington's shot was blocked and gathered by
the keeper. Scott brought a stop from Tom Dawson in the visitors' goal
shortly after but Boro continued to fashion the better opportunities in
the final third.
Pattison fired over and then thumped the post as he latched on to Harry
Chapman's cutback from the left, while Grant was forced to read the danger
and block well from the lively Chapman after 20 minutes.
Abraham shot narrowly over for the Blues but the away side grabbed the
opening goal 11 minutes before the break. Mondal took aim from a free-kick
almost 30 yards out and drilled a low strike powerfully into the far
corner beyond Collins's despairing dive.
== Second half ==
Abraham's rising effort missed the target shortly after the restart before
Chapman fashioned a great opportunity for himself to double the advantage,
cleverly flicking the ball over Tomori's head on the byline but blazing
wide on his left foot.
Middlesbrough did grab a second goal after 65 minutes as Pattison received
a pass on the edge of the box and fired into the bottom corner via the
inside of the post.
Mondal added a third minutes later, guiding a left-footed finish into the
top corner after the visitors had attacked once more with purpose and
moved the ball from left to right.
Chelsea had brief hope of a comeback as Abraham notched his 33rd goal of
the season from the penalty spot after Grant was clipped, however Boro
defended strongly in the final 15 minutes as they held on to all three
points.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards reflected afterwards on a disappointing result but a pleasing
morning for development in his side. Speaking to the official Chelsea
website, he said: 'In our last game against Everton I thought we were a
bit off the pace and contributed to the defeat but today I felt we were
beaten by the better team.
'It was good for us to have Isaac Christie-Davies back after an injury
layoff and I thought he played well. Middlesbrough had a lot of physical
qualities and a bit more experience than us in terms of playing youth
football if you look at the age of the teams man for man but these are the
games we want to be playing and challenging our players in.
'You never want to lose games but today was a good learning experience for
us. The level has gone up in this play-off league which is why we were so
pleased to qualify and be a part of it because this is the level we want to
be involved in. We've got four games remaining, including against
Manchester United and Manchester City which are sure to be further good
tests for the group.'
