Under-21s report: Chelsea 0 Tottenham 0
Mon 6 Apr 2015
Our Under-21s were involved in a 0-0 draw for the first time this season,
the match a home league game played on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.
Substitute Jeremie Boga came close for the Blues right at the end of the
first half but was denied well by the visiting goalkeeper, before Cristian
Ceballos struck a post in the second half for Spurs.
Both teams created good opportunities with both Dominic Solanke and Izzy
Brown firing wide late on as the derby ended deadlocked and the league
points were shared.
== Team news ==
It had been just over a month since the Under-21s' last league outing and
manager Adi Viveash made six changes to the side that went down 1-0 at
home to Leicester at the start of March as he fielded an all-English
starting 11. Of those retaining starting spots, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and
captain Jordan Houghton comprised the midfield trio alongside Charlie
Colkett.
Mitchell Beeney continued in goal protected by a back four of Fanktay
Dabo, Ola Aina, Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva. Dominic Solanke
started the game with 34 goals to his name for club and country this
season and he led the line up front, supported from out wide by Izzy Brown
and Reece Mitchell.
== First half ==
Both sides were able to fashion openings early on as the game started in
lively fashion. The Blues could have been handed a penalty after five
minutes as Solanke was brought down and the referee blew his whistle,
although the official deemed it to be a free-kick right on the edge of the
box despite the foul being made inside the box. Colkett stepped up and
blasted a rising strike just over.
Daniel Akindayini brought a routine save from Beeney after 14 minutes but
the hosts continued to create the bulk of the chances. Loftus-Cheek's
deflected effort flew wide and Solanke worked Luke McGee in the Spurs
goal, before Brown twice went close and Mitchell's right-footed drive was
gathered well by the goalkeeper.
Colkett headed narrowly wide of the near post but Spurs grew stronger as
the half progressed and put together their best move 10 minutes before the
break. Akindayini latched on to an accurate forward pass and forced Beeney
into a good save with his feet, while Aina cleared Deandre Yedlin's
rebound off the line.
Ceballos's shot had too much power and height to trouble Beeney before
substitute Boga, on for Loftus-Cheek who had not recovered from an earlier
knock to the head, had a great chance to break the deadlock in added time.
Brown slid the Frenchman in one-on-one but McGee raced quickly off his
line and made the stop to thwart the Blues again.
== Second half ==
Tottenham restarted strongly as Kenny McEvoy escaped in behind down the
right channel and cut the ball back dangerously for Ceballos, whose low
shot was blocked by team-mate Will Miller. Luke Amos then struck narrowly
wide before Ceballos came within inches of profiting from a goalkeeping
error.
The lively Spaniard was given plenty of time and space on the edge of the
box and fired a low effort at goal that squirmed through the keeper and
fortunately rebounded back off the post into his grateful hands. The
midfielder then drilled a shot just over before standing up and inviting a
left-sided cross for Winks to head straight at the keeper.
Mitchell hit a powerful effort straight at McGee as Chelsea improved and
then Solanke shot wide on his left foot after a clever flicked header into
space by Brown on the break. The England youth colleagues combined again
moments later as Solanke found Brown in space 10 yards out but the
forward's effort was struck wide.
Clarke-Salter made an excellent recovering tackle to deny Alex McQueen
late on as the defender bore down on goal for Spurs, but the visitors
required a magnificent stop from McGee to hold on to a point. Dabo's
delivery from the right was perfect for Brown and he stooped low to direct
a powerful header towards goal that the keeper stretched to his right to
push away. Tammy Abraham looked set to turn in the rebound but his effort
was deflected on to the bar by the keeper and away from danger.
== Manager reaction ==
Adi Viveash reflected afterwards on a high-level development game and
praised the efforts of the visiting goalkeeper to deny his team a late
winner. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'Considering we
hadn't played a game for a month, I was really pleased with our levels and
the fact we finished so strongly.
'Both teams had their good spells; we started very well but just couldn't
get the goal which is what you need to get when you're on top. Spurs then
started the second half really well after changing their shape so it took
us a bit of time to adjust, but in the last 15 minutes we looked like the
team who were going to win the game. We would have done but for a
fantastic double save from their keeper.
'Ola Aina was outstanding at the back and Jake Clarke-Salter not far
behind. For Reece Mitchell to play in a game of that intensity was a real
plus and up against an international footballer I thought he did really
well. More importantly, it was a great team effort from us and the
performance gives us a lot of encouragement going into our final seven
league games and for our Under-19s going to Switzerland for the UEFA Youth
League semi-final at the end of the week.'
