Under-21 report: Southampton 0 Chelsea 2
Thu 30 Apr 2015
Our Under-21s won on the south coast to make it two wins in a row in the
Under-21 Premier League as they moved up to sixth in the table. Six points
behind league leaders Manchester United, the Blues are still in the hunt
for the title with two games in hand on the Reds.
The clash at St Mary's was settled by Chelsea goals in each half. Kasey
Palmer escaped the close attention of three defenders and fired in a
spectacular effort that flew into the far top corner. It remained 1-0 for
over an hour before Dominic Solanke settled the game in added time with a
composed finish.
== Team news ==
Adi Viveash made six changes from the side that beat Everton a week
previously as he fielded an all-English team for the second time in three
league games. Mitchell Beeney, Jake Clarke-Salter, Charlie Colkett,
Solanke, Tammy Abraham and Palmer all returned to the starting 11.
Abraham led the line up front supported from out wide by Palmer and Alex
Kiwomya, while Solanke operated in the number 10 midfield role ahead of
captain Jordan Houghton and Colkett. Beeney replaced Jamal Blackman in
goal, protected by a back four of Ola Aina, Dion Conroy, Clarke-Salter and
Fanktay Dabo.
== First half ==
The game began in a lively fashion with the visitors hitting the woodwork
twice in the opening 15 minutes. Solanke had a low shot pushed away from
danger by home goalkeeper Will Britt before Houghton's header rebounded
back off the post following Palmer's driven corner from the left.
Beeney saved routinely from Ryan Seager but Chelsea continued to probe and
Palmer could count himself unlucky not to be celebrating the opener as his
brilliant curling free-kick bounced off the top of the crossbar and behind.
The young Blues' strong start was rewarded before the half-hour mark,
though, as another brilliant goal from Palmer gave us the lead. The tricky
midfielder used strength and trickery to get away from three defenders
before bending an unstoppable effort into the far top corner, leaving
Britt with no chance.
The Saints could have levelled instantly as Jake Sinclair found space in
the box but the forward slipped off balance at the crucial moment and
missed the opportunity. That proved to be a rare forward foray for
Southampton as Solanke's left-footed effort trickled wide, Clarke-Salter
headed straight at the goalkeeper and then Britt saved again from Palmer
before the break.
== Second half ==
Southampton restarted with a greater threat in front of goal and Dominic
Gape gave Viveash's side a warning as his free-kick flew over the bar. Sam
McQueen's effort from 20 yards also had too much height to trouble Beeney,
while Sinclair missed the target with a volleyed strike after a deep
corner had made its way to the back post.
Colkett hit a free-kick opportunity straight at the goalkeeper while
substitute Jeremie Boga caused problems after his introduction as Chelsea
grew stronger in the half. The Frenchman jinked his way into space down
the left before floating the ball towards the back post. Goalkeeper Britt
back-pedalled desperately and was relieved to see the ball bounce off the
top of the bar and behind to safety.
Substitutes Charly Musonda and Jay Dasilva combined to fashion a good
opportunity after 79 minutes as the young Belgian clipped a lovely ball
forward to the overlapping full-back down the left. The defender
accelerated towards goal and arrowed a shot towards the far corner, though
Britt was alert and able to palm the effort away.
Down the other end, Beeney made an important stop to deny substitute
Marcus Barnes a leveller. Gallagher advanced down the right and cut the
ball back cleverly for the striker, whose low strike was on target but
within grasping distance of the keeper.
Solanke thought he had settled the game with five minutes remaining but
Britt managed to get down low and excellently push his drive round the
post with a fingertip save. There was still time for Musonda to hit the
woodwork again and for Beeney to pull off a crucial stop to deny Josh Sims
one-on-one.
In stoppage time, the visitors sealed the victory as Solanke was slid in
on goal by Kiwomya and the striker kept his composure to round the keeper
and slot the ball into the empty net.
The Under-21s return to action on Monday [4 May] as they travel to Motspur
Park to take on Fulham. Kick-off is at 12.05pm and the game is live on
Chelsea TV. Before then, our Under-18s travel to Manchester United on
Saturday [2 May], kick-off 11am.
